The Outer Banks Voice appears to be a good news source for that coastal region IMO:

https://outerbanksvoice.com/
Florence Blog: https://outerbanksvoice.com/2018/09/...ed-and-rained/

Looks like the damage was fairly limited compared to the forecasts a week ago. We camped there for a week back in the 90's, at a state campground right on the ocean.

Magical to wake up, walk over the dunes, and go for a swim in the Atlantic, as the sun rose!

Continuing prayers for the folks in North Carolina especially, where profound flooding is still going on as we speak. The next few days are going to be very tough to watch.

Just marvel at the rain bands continuing to come ashore!

Stay safe,

Peter

PS -- Before all the previous charts go out-of-date, it is instructive to read this entire thread IMO, to appreciate the NOAA etc. resources that let us watch the action in real time, notably the ocean National Data Buoy system. The winds at many locations are still crankin' !!!

My back deck rain unofficial rain bucket shows 8" since it started raining. Hartsville SC

We had wind gusts but that was the worst of it so far.

Hurricane Florence

I’m glad the storm hasn’t been as bad as feared, and I enjoy laughing at reporters who get caught trying to sensationalize the storm, but let’s not lose track of the fact that for at least a good number of folks, this hurricane has been a devastating experience.

Our Daughter, hubby and g-kids sheltered it out at our place cause their home near Latta SC is really near the NC border and their area is pretty flat and the rising water has them blocked from even getting in to check things.

Anxious days ahead for all.

We got over 10" rain from storm so far.

Hope your family is OK.

Flo’ will just not go!

Amazing rainfall totals, with the worst news yet to come, I fear, from the upland streams and rural communities.

Prayers . . .

The massive flooding this storm has caused will disrupt lives and displace people for a long time.

If you have some spare cash, the American Red Cross is always a good way to provide help.

It could be us and ours...

The AARP Foundation has just announced a matching grant for Florence donations:

https://foundation.aarp.org/site/Don...CAfKaeB9wug%3d

Their contribution is to be capped at $500,000, but let's help them reach that goal ASAP!

Hope everyone on the east coast is recovering from Florence.

Plenty of stuff percolating in the Atlantic Ocean FYI:

Have a good weekend.

SC skies clear warm and pleasant but rivers north of Florence SC and I 95 goes over many that are soon cresting. Flooding expected and clear skies overhead. That’s gonna hurt folks.

Right now folks close to rivers are the concern. Daughter had minor roof leak but now finding route to work is issue. I-95 was primary and some secondaries closed too.

The full interstate I-95 detour is a doozie me thinks.

I have a friend in Conrad and I believe he has 2 to four feet in his house. The river there is expected to crest about three to four feet higher then the record crest of 18+.

Do you mean Conway SC, and perhaps the Great or Little Pee Dee Rivers? If you zoom in to the left of Conway, that wide greenbelt contains both rivers:

https://www.google.com/maps/place/Co...!4d-79.0478143

The Waccamaw River runs right through Conway.

South Carolina river conditions:

https://waterdata.usgs.gov/sc/nwis/current/?type=flow

Here is the gauge at the Conway Marina, where the water level is approaching 18', but I don't know if this chart will update in real time:

We have been laughing at the hurricane reporting for years. Several years ago an Orlando reporter went to Jetty Park at Port Canaveral to "watch the storm slam ashore". The waves were about 2" and there were people in beach chairs enjoying the day.

Another reporter said "some people are leaving in droves". That is now our favorite weather quote.

It is all about selling air time, resulting in exaggeration and looking for sensational pieces to broadcast. There is a simple solution. The FCC should prohibit ads before, during, and after news broadcasts.

Here is a better graph of the Waccamaw River, which shows the projected crest at 22', or 4' above today, per urnmor's comment in Post #77:

https://water.weather.gov/ahps2/hydr...ilm&gage=cnws1

I seem to recall, from last year's hurricane season, that this chart will update in real time. Note that the crest is not expected until Monday night!

Stay safe!

Peter

PS — For the record the water level is now 17.77.
