You guys are living my dream. I'm pretty happy with the current crop of cars that we have, but an Isetta would be the icing on the cake!

John,
That orange GMC suburban is sure nice looking. That cries out for a fifties Airstream behind it.....

I love big old cars
I thought I had posted on this thread. Here is our combo. 1971 Buick Centurion convertible, 455 CID, TH400 transmission. The car is the same weight and is almost as long as our '66 Tradewind. This photo was taken last week at the NorCal Casini Ranch Rally.

Nice combo. Do you get any "back flow" with the top down from the air being pushed by the Airstream? Don't know if that is the right question, but I wondered if you would get air being pushed back into the car from the Airstream. I would think it would be minimal.

While enjoying one of the first beautiful summer days, a week ago Monday, we happened to spot this car. It's a 1991 Saab Turbo Convertible SE. I spent a frantic five hours or so Monday evening, researching everything Saab, until I was comfortable with the care, feeding, costs, and other peculiarities thereof - and then bought it Friday. It's completely original - and in close to perfect condition - although with high miles. Unfortunately it only has a 2000 lb towing capacity so it want make a good Airstream TV! The photo was taken on Cadillac mountain, overlooking Bar Harbor, Maine.

Thank you. Lynn and I have not noticed any 'backflow' of air from the AIR (couldn't resist that one). However, when traveling any distance we generally have the top up. Freeway driving with the top down 'can' be tiring from the turbulent air and noise from big rigs. The Buick has Flowmaster exhaust system and although it has a pleasant and mellow sound of power it does reverberate off the front of the trailer so it negates easy radio/CD listening unless we are traveling a leisurely country road. We definitely try to travel the 'backroads' anyway.

Cracker, great looking Saab!!!
I too am a Saab fan, to a certain degree. Rock solid and great road manners.
A few years ago we seriously looked at and checked out in detail the V6 turbo Saab 95 as a grocery getter and TV. All factors looked promising except for the turbo engine. The engine design makes power with the turbo. In this case the turbo kicks in when the vehicle requests HP. Unfortunately when towing the vehicle wants HP most of the time and much heat is produced as a result. In the end we abandoned the prospective project as there were better, more viable choices out there.

The '91 is a four-banger and as long as you keep it out of the turbo range it gets great mileage. I just checked it out during the trip where the photo was taken and I got an honest 30.92 mpg. Of course, it sure is fun to kick in the turbo!

For sure, know the feeling well. In 1980 I came close to buying a new turbo Saab sedan. Stumbled upon a 5 year old 450 SEL Mercedes for the same price so bought the Benz. I would have been happy with either cars.

Great thread and photos! Our garage has a 1948 Willys Jeep (CJ-2A) which is being done over as a WWII ambulance jeep. The rented garage has a 47 Chrysler Windosr sedan and a 48 Plymouth woodie wagon in residence. My wife asked a few years back why the "new" cars were outside and the old cars inside? My answer was "depreciating assets outside, appreciating assets inside". Still makes sense to her.

Pictures are really important. That 47 Chrysler sounds neat, and the 48 Woodie is quite rare if I remember correctly. Pictures, did I mention that?

Nice car you got. Going for drives can be very expensive if one isn't careful. I read a while back where a late eighties Saab was driven over a million miles and the company gave the fellow a new one.

There was a story in the papers about a guy in Quebec who bought a new 1964 Dodge in 1964. He used it as a taxi in Montreal. He drove it for close to 40 years and it had nearly 2.5 million miles on it. Eventually it was broad sided and totaled.

Since we are now with infant, Jim decided to buy me a station wagon. Since nothing says I love you like a Saab with 35 year old safety standards. One picture is how we found her, the other is what we hope she looks like when we are done restoring her.

Kathleen, that's so cool! Are you going to wear a pink dress when you drive it?

Well we will have to think about it. The coolest part of the car is the rumble seat in the back. Remember when you used to fight over the rear facing seat in the station wagon! It is ubercool.
Jim has it running but the lever shocks are really bad. So he drives it up and down the drive way.

Kathleen....
that is SO COOL! Is it a three cylinder engine? More photos - can I see the insides and engine?
I've always had the hot rodding / wrenching bug. I've always thought an older Volvo 122 would be cool... and "cheaper" to run than an American V8. I loved my Chevy Astro v8, except for the cheap plastic and awful interior bits and the price of gas that it took.
Maybe I should look at Swedish cars more ....
I thought one of these might be cool for the kids - except I think I'd want a roll cage too!

Marc...way too many questions about car insides! He is the lug nut, I just like the finish work...like me standing their drinking a margarita as he washes the car.
It has a V4 engine. Here are a few shots of it. We don't have a good interior photo yet. Will post later.
