@Bob - I forgot all about MarineTex!! Excellent call. That will definitely be the fix. I actually have a few tubs of it in my old sailboat emergency box that I forgot about.

@Becky - That's a pretty crazy story. I guess I should always carry my cell phone on me when working on the trailer... because I'm not sure if anyone would hear me at the storage yard.

@TimK - I agree 100%, she gets the kudos....especially if she finishes the other 4 before our trip (and bonus points if she makes the big awning too).

Update 1: Finished the gas lifts for the bed. Tried to use (2) 40# springs and it still needed more, so I added a 60# piston and it works pretty well. I also added a lift spring on each of the exterior hatches. None of it was required for my trip, but it sure makes it easier to store things and to access the hot water heater.

Starting polishing again, first cut done on curbside. Endcaps and a short strip around the roof remaining.

Vents are sealed and installed.

My gray tank mishap has been repaired with a bolt and epoxy.

Can you see what I was working on in the reflection? Yes, all the counters. We've got the rough shapes all cut and the cutouts ready. The stacking strips for the edge are cut and prepped. I need to epoxy the edges on and router/ sand it all. Hope to have it finished next weekend, which will leave 3 days for polishing and a few final items. I took a picture of our selected Corian Riviera style with sharpie to scale. We bought off of a very limited remnant selection but happened to really like this grain.

Wow nice job Peter! Your trip is coming up soon, looks like you'll be ready. We unfortunately have to cancel our trip because of a sick pooch. Oh well more time to work on the trailer...

Too bad about your trip... Are you at least coming to the Rivernook rally in October? Yours should be done by then with all the spare time to work on it...

Before I posted this update, I was really hoping to find the "before" picture that I took a year ago. Alas, I cannot. so I am going to post the after photo and you can imagine the change from my description.

Knight has had a long and full life before we found her, as evidenced by the many brush marks and scratches on the side. However, I didn't need a flawless shell. It wasn't a rollover, and it wasn't true neglect. Instead, it looked like she had been taken down many backcountry camping roads, which is exactly what we plan to do with her. Now that I am polishing her and really making her a "Knight in Shining Armor", I had to tend to the wear and tear as needed.

The worst of it all has always been some large scratch/ tear on the rear side of the door, and a dent to the door within a door. This would not have been that bad if some well intentioned owner hadn't put Bondo all over, up to 3/8" deep in places, followed by painting the whole door silver. Fast forward to 2011, half of the paint had worn off and the Bondo was cracking and chipping in places, but solid in others.

We decided before we got it that we would just reskin the door, but the farther I've progressed, the more I've decided that's an "eventually" rather than a "soon". So in alignment with my recent polishing, I used a hammer and chisel, razor blade, sander, and 7 grades of sandpaper to remove and repair this area. The results are below.

Same as our 54 Peter, "Night" is looking very good! I am polishing ours right now also, the beauty marks from 50 plus yrs. of use really stand out after polishing, a previous owner had used a disc sander on my door for some reason? Lots of polishing and fine sanding to get rid of that.

Counters are coming along nicely. That Corian epoxy sets up quick quick quick! I don't know if I could have done it if Marie wasnt there to spread it as I applied it, and positioning/clamping the long strips for the stacked edges was definitely a two person job as well.

I attached pictures of the progress, and you can also see the gun that I made to save $50 on a tool I will only use once and is nothing more than a modified caulking gun....

Door looks fine, I'd do that "eventually" also, and actually have a pretty good gouge in my door, but it shuts and locks, so I'll be doing that last.

I'm assuming you saw my post about hubcaps on the other thread? I bought the baby moons, 10 3/16" diameter, on eBay. Hammered the bead a bit and they fit on nice and snug. I will remove the wheels later to be powdercoated, but for now at least I have some shiny baby moons.

I've been looking on ebay, but am not sure what size I need.

It's a 10 3/16" inner diameter of the beaded lip, with about 1/4" wide lip that I rolled/flattened to 3/16" or so.

The wheel is a 6x5.5 on a 15", and has the three "nubs" around the middle. It works much better than I expected.

It was Christmas for me today. Look what just got delivered...

They are used, but in excellent condition and were beautifully crated and packed by a forums member.

Now I need to go find a place to fill them before our trip.

I knew 5x5.5 didn't sound right..... I really was thinking 6x5.5 on a 15".
Basically a chevy rim.

Ok, so you just had to roll the lip a little to help it fit, good to know.
I've been looking on ebay, but was confused as to the size.
The 15" probably gives you a little higher ride, but may be good for back road access and remote locations.

Ahh, the propane tanks looks sweet... what a nice touch to finish up your last minute Rally to the Rally.
