WD tension hitches don't "have" to have the tension removed, when backing into a campsite or traversing uneven terrain like a drainage swale or uneven slopes but it is good practice to do so. The torque imparted by the hitch is manifested as sheer stress in load bearing components of the trailer and tow vehicle which can twist the frame and buckle sheet metal if the the imbalances from one side of the hitch to the other become excessive.

So a reasonable compromise is to leave the tension in place if the maneuver is gentle and remove the tension if it appears to be anything more than modest. This is what I do.

The key here is 'normally'...too much angle and they will bend. AMHIK

I have an Equalizer hitch and a 3/4 ton pickup. I normally don’t remove the bars. However, recently I had a pull thru spot that had a steep decline when leaving the site. This would cause a lot of stress on the bars when my TV reached level ground and the RV would still be angling down. I did not attach my bars until both RV and TV were on level ground. This worked well for me.

In the future, I will consider removing the bars in those situations where there is a large incline or decline entering or leaving the campsite as the Equlizer bars aren’t as flexible as other WD bars.
