Not to dismiss the agony that a lot of people are going through right now - the downturn in RV sales may mean that we won't have to make application one year in advance to stay at one of our local campgrounds. I know that many of us are simply planning to cut back on the length of our trips. Find a local campground with all the amenities you want and become a regular! When my kids were young we camped extensively (every other weekend) - but we seldom strayed more than a hundred miles from home. A new Airstream may be out of reach for a lot of folks - but, fortunately, older Airstreams are always available - and some are ready to roll with only minor attention! That said, if you stay close to home, the risks of serious problems is greatly reduced and "limping home" is not such a daunting thought! Too, a tow vehicle that might be marginal for mountainous terrain - or long trips on the freeway - might be reasonably adequate (---with due respect to safety) for short trips to a nearby campground. Camping is still one of the cheapest and most enjoyable activities for a family - and it doesn't require a 34' Winnebago!

I have to agree. RV sales may be slow, but the crowded campgrounds seem to indicate that plenty of folks are still out enjoying the RV lifestyle. We prefer camping weekdays. It's usually very pleasant and far easier to find a spot.
