Lower rock/stone guards
I've noticed the taller lower rock/stone guards on some of the Airstreams now. I got a price on them but failed to ask if the shorter models were still being made and what the factory price on them were. What is your take on the taller versiors and how they look on the trailer?

Craig -
I have the shorter version rock guards. I also have a bunch of small stone dings just above them. My take is that the taller versions would look better with those small dings in them.

i agree the taller version provides more coverage and looks better. here are some shots of mine with the talls and the same trailer without. it's not visible in the photos but mine have several dings in the top 6 inches, which would be in the trailer skin without the extra coverage. i believe the 'talls' are also on the safaris and internationals now.
cheers

The tall version is what we have on our Classic. So far no dents but I feel better knowing that they are made of Stainless steel and would probably take a hit better than the softer aluminum. Also, I think I prefer the higher guards as far as looks go.
Take care,
Tin Can

Our early 2005 28 Classic has collected some major dents above the low rockguards, to purists, known as segment protectors.
As an optimist, it proves we pull the unit around, otherwise, the dents are downright ugly.
My suggestion? If you see a unit that you like with low rockguards, don't buy it.

Thanks 2air',
Now that I see basically the same trailer type with tall and regular protectors, I believe I will order the tall ones. Nice trailer you have.

Does anyone know if the rock gaurds or "segment protectors" can be installed on a '74 AS. The one I have has only been pulled twice, and I'd hate to start getting rock dings on this GEM of a trailer at this late date.

I installed a set of segment protectors on my 1986 myself and I don't see why they wouldn't work on the 74.
I bought my shorter protectors from Airstream on ebay for $200 (much cheaper than the tall ones) so I didn't get exactly what I needed. They were actually built for a wide body but fit fine on my thinner unit so I don't think you need to worry about that either. Compared to the painted on guards this quite an improvement for protection and looks.

What about putting mud flaps on the TV? I don't like the look of them, but I have considered these.

I have the short ones and they had no dents as the a/s had been towed 500 miles form 05 -08/07 when I bought it. Fast forward to this day and as I sit in Huntington beach clocked over 10k since october and they are a mess, but no dents on the trailer!! I call them the sacrificial nodes, if you are a boater you will know. It looks like new ones every 20k for pride if anything. I would suspect the taller ones will be needed for 3/4 or greater trucks.

Pauly,
I have small mudflaps on my vehicle and Enkay Rock Tamers on the stinger of my Hensley Arrow. That combo does a good job but every once in awhile a small rock gets by. Do a forum search on Enkay Rock Tamer and you will see much info on a popular way to protect your trailer.

Hey Craig,
I was in Tenn this past fall and spent an afternoon at George Dickel, in Tullohoma, it was great! The folks at the distellery were super!

What? You didn't hit the Jack Daniels Distillery down the road in Lynchburg also? Jack Daniels, by the way, is in a dry county therefore they only serve lemonade at the end of the tour rather than a shot of sour mash whisky.
