Broken wheel stud 65 Caravel
i broke a stud on my 65 caravel. (i am way to embarrassed to tell you what happened.)
then i was trying to replace it. got the hub off after destroying the cap because i didnt realize it screwed off.
cant figure out how to put a new stud in since the brake is in the way.
is it possible or do i need to buy another? where? how much? what about the bearing cap?
thanks for all the help so far

If it's the original axle I would go with a new axle complete............

I did a simular thing. The studs are pressed into the brake drum, but you can carefully beat the broken one out. I took the broken stud along with the length measurement from a good one, to a trailer supply place and found a replacement. Then with a spacer, and a small amount of grease, you can draw the new one back into the drum with a lug nut.

SteveH------i cant beat it out. that is what i do on my hot rods. the brake drum is in the way of beating it out. if i look at it from inside looking out, there is a large brake for the electric brake to push outwards on it. that brake drum is on with 3 large rivets. behind that must be the heads of the wheel studs.
is this a standard 65 caravel axle? i just bought the AS----maybe it has an aftermarket axle?
ideas?

You should find a plate spot welded to the axle tube, that's about 1 1/2" x 3 inches, that contains the manufacturers name.

Sorry Kevin, your earlier model must be different than mine.

If you still had the cap, you could drill out the rivets and replace them with some grade 8 screws. You might need to drill and tap the rivet holes, or use flat head hardware. Lots of older drake drums had separate armatures (the flat plate the magnet drags on) that were held on with screws and nuts.
But if you're missing the cap, you might be better off buying a new pair of loaded backing plates and single piece drums. They're about $60 ea, and should match the axle mounting flange OK.
You should also call Andy at Inland RV to see if you have one of the famous "breaking spindle" axles.
