VW Touareg as tow vehicle
Has anyone had experience (or thoughts) about the VW Touareg as a tow vehicle for Airstreams? It has acceptable tow ratings. Interesting factoid: the name Touareg comes from the name of a nomadic tribe in the Sahara.

The Touareg is not a sutible tow vehicle for a larger Airstream, even though the tow ratings support it, the toungue weight does not, and you cannot use a weight distributint hitch. The commercials showing one towing a large Airstream were false adverising. Do a search for Touareg tow Airstream and you should find All the info you need. Also read this story http://www.cbsnewyork.com/topstories...303155456.html
I have never had one, but did read up on it a a year or two ago.

Check out this thread:

XRay is our resident VW Touareg specialist. He's towning a 22' CCD.
This has been covered a few times. After reading the above link, do a search under Touareg and you'll find a bunch more.

Yes.
Xray is our Treg specialist. I am thinking along the Toureg route to pull my 19' International some day.
As far as the weight distribution goes, from what I understand, if you order the optional air suspension package, the Treg somehow is suppose to sense when there is a load in the back (tongue) and adjusts itself accordingly, spo that both the trailer and the car run level. At the very least there are different height settings forr the Treg. This is about all I can say without to much certainty
Alos you might want to visit VWVortex, and check out the Toureg discussion group. Xray is a contributor to that group as well:

Davidp, Look what kind of experience BluValley had on the forum. CBS News New York did a "Shame on You" segment about VW Touareg.

If I recall though, the CBS segment had a large trailer over 22'. If staying within 22', I think you'll be fine. If you plan on going over 22', I would say that the VW will do it, but I am unsure how wise it would be to do and would suggest getting something else.
XRay is the man to ask though. He's got lots of **real world** application exp with it towing a 22 foot CCD.

OK, Here's the latest from the Fatherland. The air suspension will level to some extent. The hitches we are now installing are rated at 7700 pounds with a tongue weight of 770 pounds. The software for the trailer lighting has been upgraded and the bugs are gone. The CGVWR seems to be eluding the sales dept. and I haven't found anything on the service side.
Go test drive the V10 diesel. 310 HP, 553 ft/lbs torque @ 2000 rpm. This will kick you in the butt when you stand on it. With the six speed tiptronic auto trans you can select nearly any gear you need.
I would love to try this combo out on some of the 30% grades down by the Fox River but there's no way to sneak one out of the lot. No way I can afford to buy one though.
I would say that the GCVWR would be the determining factor on how big the trailer could be, but I would think 25 Ft. would be the upper limit.
Somewhere in the posts is a link to an test done by a trailer magazine.

Wannabe a test driver!
I've probably said this in a previous discussion but...I would love to give that Touareg a try. If I had not just gotten my Tahoe when they came out I probably would have. I love them and lots of us actually have AS < 22 ft.

The V8 Touareg is a stupendous tow vehicle. Ignore everything else you hear or read.

I am towing my big hunk of love, a 28' CCD, with the Touareg and have nothing but great things to say about it. I'm not sure exactly what truly constitutes a great tow vehicle, but I hitch my CCD up and go, go, go.
Here in Dallas, it's all about the vehicle bling, bling. Which is why it is nice to have something that is different than the "Jones's".

Hey! Just had a customer pull in with a 6 cylinder Toureg, car trailer with a '43 Kubelwagen on it.(WW2 German VW based Jeep) Pulls well but he had a problem with trailer lighting. Turns out problem was the trailer, not the car. Our Toureg "specialist" is not a RV specialist so don't forget to bring any wiring info you have. Try to explain electric brakes to someone who's never seen one.
See you on the road,
Tom
