considering a restoration

Hi,

I'm a new member, recently retired from the Coast Guard and am thinking of renovating a 26-28 Airstream to accomodate my wife and I and our two young kids. Like all of you, I love the airstream exterior style, but I would like to make a lighter, more minimalist interior. I like the style of the new 28 international ccd. Is it possible to achieve that interior polished aluminum look on an older model by removing some insulation? If so, what does it do to the habitability of the unit? I have seen stories about a few older trailers renovated with more modern designs inside but haven't found any archives of plans or ideas for this. Thanks for any help.

Tim,

Welcome to the forums. What era Airstream are you considering? The 50's are all aluminum inside and you can strip off the paint and polish or replace the existing skin with new, since they are all flat panels, even the end caps. In the 60's the interior end caps were make of plastic, but you could remove them and put in flat aluminum panels also. JCFerguson has replaced the aluminum skin with plywood, use the search button to find his thread.
