Moen - Water Filter

As I was pumping a lot of RV anti-freeze through the cartridge on my water filter (the one I use for winter storage), it dawned on me that making a bypass plug out of the old filter would be a good way to keep from wearing my arm out as I pumped the A-F through the filter.

Has anyone done this? If so, what were your results?

My guess is that I could just cut the bayonet end off the cartridge, fill/plug the orifice into the filter chamber, and reinstall. BTW, my cartridge is the 9501/9601. That's the one that purportedly will pump water all over if you don't put the filter back into the system. I understand that newer units will work with the filter removed.

Putting antifreeze through a filter is a good way to ruin a filter.

You can make a permanent bypass, if you like, by installing Y valves at each end, and connecting the two Y valves with another piece of water line run parallel to the filter. Come time to winterize, bypass the filter, and remove it while it's bypassed. Pump your antifreeze through the bypass only. Come spring, put the filter back in, switch the Y valves back to the filter side, and you're good to go until winter comes again.

Understood, but this filter was a couple of years old. I think a year is about all the longer I want to have one inline.

If I don't have to break the PEX, I would prefer to go that way. If I do end up cutting the lines, I will just use a single Shark Bite ball valve, and completely isolate the filter. I would blow out the lines, remove the filter, and close the ball valve.
