Window Sealant

As a semi retired body person I am wondering what is the standard product you use to re-seal windows??? A product used in auto is butyl rubber in roll form. It is used in non-structural windows. I assume the trailer windows are not structural and urethane sealant would me a pain to remove down the road. Does anyone or has anyone, used butyl tape??

I may have just bought some yesterday from NAPA. I went there looking for butyl tape. They couldn't find any, but referred me to "windshield sealer" or something like that. 3M calls it "Windo-Weld Ribbon Sealer" it's PN:08611. 5/16"x15' round bead. It's black. I went ahead and bought it.

I was planning to use the butyl tape for sealing under the Fantastic fans that are going in sometime soon.

Are you referring to using it for reseating the glass pane within the window frame, or if you have thermopanes, then between the two glass panes and the frame? What's currently installed in my windows is greyish colored.

There was recently a thread on here about someone who was taking apart their windows and cleaning them up and then replacing this stuff.

I agree with you, the windows themselves are not structural.

Vintage Trailer Supplies has window bedding tape 1/16" x 1/4" x 50 ft for $8. It's made of isopolybutylsomething.

Yes both those are "butyl" tape and redily available at
any local body shop supply house.

I am refering to rebedding the window frames and not
the thermo panes (wish the Arogosy had them!!)

Wow it appears you have to remove rivets to rebed the window??? I'll pass on that and use Acryl-R myself.

Butyl bedding tape is also available at most RV supply houses, HVAC supply houses and metal/roofing suppliers. There are some minor differences in the formulation but shouldn't make any difference in this application. It also comes in varying widths and thicknesses. I have a couple of rolls floating around here that are 3" wide But I think on the Airstream the best stuff would be the 3/4"x1/8" or the closest to that you can get. BTW real fun stuff to work with on a 100+ degee day
