Well, maybe ......

However, it might be possible that a higher amperage connection will be hotter than similar connections with lower loads, because for the same contact area, more amperage flow generates more resistance and therefore more heat.

You are correct to maintain that if the temperature is SIGNIFICANTLY hotter, there is a problem.

However, the prevailing use of an IR camera is to identify a problem before it progresses to failure. In other words, it is a preventive maintenance tool. Consequently, there is a need for temperature image analysis skills. It is not enough to simply look for the failure condition as that makes for a really bad day.

So, take care. There really is a bit more to it. Pat

We used to do routine checks, and track history with the images, that way you develop a profile, and if it starts to change you know there is a problem. It was amazing though how temperature in a motor control center would change just with a connection that was loose.

Now we are using IR equipped drones to fly in sewer pipes and we can assess the pipe integrity based on temp profile. It is an amazing technology......

Well.... disregarding the comments about IR "Camera" gadgets....(since this thread is about IR Thermometers ... that Chineese Technology Center (I.E. Harbor Freight) which employs American cashiers has them on sale yesterday for $14.95. (I once made the mistake of commenting while in the checkout line about my regret for buying non-American and the cashier responded "They keep THIS American employed!")

It works great. Put in two AAA batteries... Point it at an object.... pull the trigger while observing the laser-spot for only a moment... and read the LDC display. It accurately displays and memorizes/recalls the last temp measurement. Checked it against known analog temps and it's spot-on.
