Washer Woes

Hi all,

We are having a wee problem in our shower. We cleaned it out last year and found a disintegrated washer fabricated out of leather (we think). We've gone to a bunch of plumbing supply places and nobody has a washer that fits the fixture. Right now, we have the closest fitting washer we could find, but it's a bad fit and it leaks.

Looking over our options, we are figuring that if we cannot find a washer, we'll just put a shut off valve in the piping feeding into the fixture (inside the bathroom vanity). Not optimal, but we don't know what else to do, short of removing the fixture (not an option, since we love it's old fashioned chrome look).

Does anyone know if there are sources for washers for these old (1961) fixtures? Or is there an effective way to diy fabricate them?

I just replaced the rubber washers in my 75 Shower. I got an assortment of washers from Home Depot, plumbing section. The kit came with 4 that were a close fit. I used a file (metal file) to make the diameter a little smaller. Sandpaper would work as well.
