Unwanted sewer odor

1973 IS rear bath. Too often unpleasant odor comes out of toilet when flushing. Have tested with clean water. Bowl 1/2 full, push pedal to open valve ~ 1/2 way. Before bowl is MT air ( unpleasant air ) burps up through the remaining water. Could the tank vent line be plugged? I would think water entering the tank would force the air up and out of the vent pipe ???

Sewer vent pipes attrack some birds. One could be in that pipe.

Check that vent, and while your at it, check the vent pipe gasket as well. You will find it more than likely badly cracked.

Thanx to all contributors...Will be sure pipe is not plugged or impaired and will check for gasket failure. In deeper thought its a possibility that the vent line could be plugged more or less at the tank where 38 years of "contents crust" have built up. Yes, I faithfully use a potty additive. Thanx Again Jim & Mitzi

GEO Method

Jim & Mitzi, you probably do have a tank vent problem. Also you may want to look at the GEO Method for black tank management. Just do a google search on GEO method. I have been using this method on my AS and previous SOB's. We have never had a problem with smell or build up while using the GEO method. It involves liquid detergent, water softner, and bleach. You can also dump your tanks into septic systems using the GEO method.

Good luck.
