Looking for advice on repair/replace Blackwater tank for '67 Caravel

I'm looking for a new tank or advice on how to repair mine. I think my tank is made of polyurethane and is red. I would like to know if anyone knows how to repair these or where to buy a new one. I have some cracking around the dump valve. This is my first airstream, so any help would be greatly appreciated. TIA.

Chuck,

Welcome to the forum.

I'd offer two suggestions. First -- if your tank is like my '65 Caravel was, plan on dumping it.

I made one out of fiberglass, documented here. It's certainly more work than a new one, but the cost isn't bad. Consider the wood as sacrificial and think of the several layers of fiberglass as the tank.

Another option is to draw up your tank from the old one and order a new one like Tim Shepard did in his blog on the VAP. See his blog post here.

You do know about the VAP, don't you?

Good luck with her.

John

Polyurethane or polyethylene? You can weld polyethylene.

Tank material

The usual material for the tanks is polyethylene and is very weldable. Some people have also used a special epoxy.
