We're talking about two different things here...

1) In 50's/60's there was no mill finish texture, it was smooth so there is no need to sand or use other techniques to get through the texture before polishing, as you (and other polished 70's trailer owners) did.
2) In the 80's the alloy changed which is a different aluminum composition - this has nothing to do with the mill finish texture.

Regardless, even 80's or newer trailers can be polished (all metal can) - it's just the aluminum alloy is different so the shine may not be quite as bright or last as long.

What do you strip a '65 with? What do you compound/polish with Shari?

We stripped our '64 with Kleen Strip Aircraft Stripper, our '56 didn't have clear coat.

We've polished two trailers - the first was our '64 GlobeTrotter that we have since sold. Originally (about 8 years ago), we used the Perfect Polish method. Right before we sold it about a year ago, we "touched it up" using rouge bars like we did with our '56 (also see post #487 & others in the same area of my thread).

Regardless of the compounding method, the only way (IMO) to really get that mirror shine is with a Cyclo Polisher w/micro fiber cloths & Nuvite - it's what gets the swirls out.

Sweet!

Freaking Awesome is all I can say.
Just read your other post "it's a girl".... well portions of it. I may just use a 1/2" drill with the GA58 grinder/buffer adapter and a 6" wheel.
Do you think that would work for the compounding portion?

Also, how much of the Black/Brown/White caswell compound bars do you think would be needed for a first go round on a 20' globetrotter?

It's not too bad, but will need a good compound.

Will a whole brown bar do a trailer?

Oh man, you got me going. I cannot wait, I'm like a kid in a candy store.

I'm seeing if I can buy local here, but if not I'll go through caswell.
Fastenal does have alot of that stuff from Osbourne, but the guy is going to
let me know what it will cost.
Caswell isn't that bad, all in all I thought it would cost much more.
I'm guessing the reason people charge so much is due to labor.

I'll keep following up on your thread and see if I can get through it.
Right now I'm following about 5 and they take up a lot of time just reading.
