VIAIR compressor noise

Hi,

I have VIAIR compressor that I use for top off my trailer tires.

The other day, when I turned it on, it made funny noise, and the air coming out of it was very weak.

The noise was like, pu-ku-pu-ku-pu-ku-pu-ku
(That's how it sounded like to me)

Is it broken?

Thanks,

Atsushi

Sounds like a problem, I would call the company. I was having problems with a gas compressor lately, different company, in another application and I just called the company and have a solution now. Give em a call.

FYI here are some Viair 450 threads which may have relevant info:

Is yours a 450 model?

Agree that a call to the company may be productive.

I did call them, and they said that it's likely some internal component parts got loose. I have an option for returning it for inspection (I'm not sure where I kept the documentation/receipt, etc. though....).

At this point, I'm not sure if I want to go through the trouble of packing it and sending it to them even if I get a replacement, which I kind of doubt.

I had originally bought this compressor because I was thinking of using it for winterizing as well as putting air in the tires. But I have had success with AF only method, and I don't think I would need this kind of compressor for that purpose.

For inflating tire (just add a few PSI to our tire before our trip), I got a RYOBI tire inflate, and that may be enough for this purpose.

Thanks for the update. Does that Ryobi unit have a pressure gauge someplace which gives a rough approximation of the pressure in the tire?

Thanks,

Peter

Yes, Ryobi tire inflater has an air pressure gauge.

Could you use the Ryobi to winterize?

Doubt if the Ryobi’s duty cycle could handle that IMO. The Viair 450’s is 100% which means you can run it nonstop. See links in search results in Post #3 for details on the 450.

Another difference is that the Viair can run off the TV or AS batteries, whereas the Ryobi needs its smallish batteries recharged frequently.

Thanks Atsushi for that detail.

Jumping on the dog pile of questions...
Have you used the Ryobi to see if it will really inflate your tires? Or is it more for pool toys?
My reason for asking is I have a small compressor that is so low air flow, and low pressure that it takes me 20 minutes to add 4 pounds of pressure.
I have a Viair that I have actually had to use to inflate my trailer tires twice and it did it quite nicely in about 4 minutes. Not the same as my shop air but still acceptable when it was needed.
Not to mention the money you spent on the Viair and are willing to toss in the trash then deal with Home Depot?

I used Ryobi during this trip to top off my tires (Just add 1~3 psi) in the morning. My tires are Marathon Endurance and their cold max pressure is 65psi. I would like it to be above 61~63 when I get going. So for that purpose, Ryobi worked great--even better than ViAir compressor because Ryobi is electric. Nothing to plug in or connect to the battery.

I suppose if I have to inflate a completely deflated tire, it would take a really long time for Ryobi to do that (you have to take a break every 3 minutes or so). But if a tire has that much leak, wouldn't I have a bigger problem?

I don't think you can winterize with Ryobi, but I have never tried it either.

It sounds like there is a problem with your Marathon tires. They shouldn't lose 1-3 PSI every day. My Michelin tires can go weeks/months without needing any air unless the morning temperature drops significantly.

Perhaps my posting was misleading....

1~2 of my tires lose 1~3 psi over a few weeks. The one before the last trip was in early September, so it took about 6~7 weeks for a couple of them to lose that. So before departure last week, I added a couple of PSI. When we were leaving yesterday morning, I probably didn't have to add air. But since I had it, and it's so easy to use (and I wanted to use it), I added 1~1.5 psi.

One of my tires had appeared to lose more than other three this summer, so I actually brought that one to a tire shop. They did a submerge test, and no leak was found. So for that moment, I'm just paying a little more close attention to that one.
