1975 31 Sovereign
We just purchased a 1975 31ft Sovereign. When we turn on the a/c it blows cool for about 5 minutes and then shuts itself off and will not start back for a while and then another 5 minutes. Any help or clues?
Thanks
Stephanie

Are You on 30 amp circuit?
I know this is probably a stupid question, but do you have it connected to a 30amp circuit?
When I first purchased my Overlander last year, I was convinced that the AC wasn't working properly (hooked up to normal 20 amp household circuit) but worked great on 30 amps. (I added a 30 amp circuit and outlet specifically for the camper)
Hope your Sovereign looks better than mine.

It could be that the motor that runs the exterior fan (under the shroud) is dead. What you describe sounds like a thermal overload due to the freon overheating. This is a fail safe so you do not kill the unit.
I would pull the shroud and fire it up to see if the exterior motor is running at all. it could be a bad motor, or a bad starting capacitor. If you need service, and it is an Armstrong unit, call a home AC company. The units are VERY fixable and it will cost less than a new one. If you take it to a dealer they will just want to replace it.

Short cycling can also be caused by using an extension cord, that is not adequate for the trailer.
The smallest size extension cord wire is # 10.
If your cord is 12, 14, 0r 16 gauge, there's your trouble.

Thanks for everyone's help, my husband is going to check out everything based on your suggestions. He just told me though that the unit states that it is an Emerson Quiet Kool, that doesn't match what the original one was, or I think it doesn't. Does anyone know?
Thanks

Stephanie.
Emerson is an after market unit.
Airstream never used Emerson in production, or in the service department.

We found out the fan and shaft are bad on the Emerson a/c roof air. Which would be best, try to find parts (any suggestions where would be apprecated) or buy a new roof a/c or perhaps any other type of a/c? Any help is greatly appreciated. Had to come home early today from camping, too HOT!

Stephanie.
Replace the AC with a new style 15,000 BTU unit.
Make sure that you use a drain pan, or a brand that has been modified so that you don't need one.
Presently, Carrier seems to have the best unit, because of it's moving interior vent system.
However, if you can hold off, Carrier is coming out with a model they say is superior to the present one, including being low profile.
