Painting Refrigerator

Renewing a 1965 Caravel. Pulled the old frig out, cleaned the pilot/burner and now she is working again! I am so happy!!! The back and sides have some surface rust. Will it hurt anything to shoot some Rustoleum to inhibit the spread of more rust? I don't want to hurt the performance but want this thing to last another 50 years.

Those old Dometic's can last and last. I am not sure that painting the back and sides will help anything though. Inhibiting rust on curved surfaces such as the pipes and cooling unit is a pretty difficult task, and you might just do more harm to the heat transfer than good. If it were mine, I would leave it alone. As always, this is my personal opinion and what I would do.

Yes it's hard to believe it still works. After all, it is about the same age as me. Maybe I'll just repaint the side and leave the back the way it is. I just thought if I could slow down the rust it might prevent failure down the road. It's a good time to do it since it's out on the bench. Now I'm off to try to find a thermocouple for the oven.

ospho

A light coating of Ospho (dilute phosphoric acid, like used in Coke) will convert existing rust to an inert oxide, inhibit future rust and not significantly interfere with any heat transfer.

If the existing paint or rust is loose or scaling, knock it off first with a wire brush.

Phosphoric acid is also one of the active ingredients in WD40.

That's what I'll do! I'll spray it with WD40, wipe off the excess and be done with it. Thanks!

Still should wire-brush it to get loose rust off before spraying with WD-40.
