Just purchased a 1975 23' Safari. Airstream online specs for that year list it weighing just under 4200 pounds. Data listed on info certificate in the trailer says 5800 pounds!??? In the online data not even 31' models of that year weighed 5800 lbs. any advice on which weight is correct would be appreciated! Tying to figure out if I can get away with towing it with an SUV.
The only way to know for sure is to get it on the scales loaded for camping.
The 4200# may be it's "dry weight" after shipping from the factory and the 5800# may be its GVWR. I'm not sure - but get it to the scales and you'll know for sure.
My '73 safari has a 3800lb empty weight, 5800lbs gvw.
Not much changed in the 2 years...yours probably has the exact same gvw because it has the same 2 2600lb-rated axles.
You'll probably be in the ~5000lb area loaded for camping, but of course, the only way to know for sure is to weigh it.
I think we figured it out. What the seller thought was the actual trailer weight is the max gross vehicle weight. Closer inspection of the owners manual showed that the actual trailer weight is 3800 lbs. Which makes me happy because I really didn't want to get a full size pickup. Planning to tow it with a Volvo xc90 V8 or 3.2L 6. Has a listed tow capacity of 5000lbs.
