wheel trim fix?

Not sure how to address this issue -- as you can see from photo the aluminum "trim" has been applied with white caulk and it's very rough. I'm guessing someone did this because of the sharp edge around wheel well area. I would like to remove the caulk and the thin piece of alumimum trim (it's on the verge of falling off all on it's own.) You can see that I already removed a bit on the right side. Not sure what to replace it with. Any suggestions would be great!

Photo didn't work.
Yours should be the same as ours if your talking about the wheel opening trim. The original peice is an aluminum strip with a bead that forms the visible garnish. It's riveted on and it appears that riviet joins the wheel well tub to the outer body.

I'll be removing this peice by the end of weekend and try to get you a good picture.

I've been looking for it too. There are hundreds of extrusion shop with thousands of shapes. Best I could find so far was an edge bead for 1/16th inch open channel. It might work with a little tapping to close the channel. I'm still looking.

Is this the original piece or the replacement piece in the photo?

That's very original. I don't know how long this particular trim was used. Mine was built at Jackson Center Ohio in early '59. I know the California units were different. Where was your's built?

Mine is a California model. It's got a '59 serial number but an additional tag on it is stamped 12/58.
I'll have to go out and look at the '60 CA model that I have and the '61 Ohio model to compare as well.

Saw on a previous posting (may have been a different forum) the different wheel openings used on the CA and OH models. Sorry I couln't help with your trim.

Airstream did the same thing as the Auto manufactures. The new model year starts in Oct. So anything dated 10/58 through 9/59 is a 59 Model.

I think The different wheel opening was more the shape it was cut. I have found the Shape on our Ohio built 59's were the first year they did that. I have heard it refered to the "Crown" wheel openings. The California plant was still cutting the wheel well with a slight slop down from front to rear for 59, sort of a teardrop. Pretty good chance the garnish used is the same.

I checked out the '60 CA and it doesn't have any trim at all around the wheel well. In fact, it doesn't look like it ever had any. It's a very sharp edge.
The '61 Ohio model is currently at my folk's, so I'll have to check it out on my next visit.
