Airstream did the same thing as the Auto manufactures. The new model year starts in Oct. So anything dated 10/58 through 9/59 is a 59 Model.
I think The different wheel opening was more the shape it was cut. I have found the Shape on our Ohio built 59's were the first year they did that. I have heard it refered to the "Crown" wheel openings. The California plant was still cutting the wheel well with a slight slop down from front to rear for 59, sort of a teardrop. Pretty good chance the garnish used is the same.
