What to do with generator while sightseeing???

When leaving campsite for the day to go sightseeing, hiking, etc., what is the best option for securing valuables such as generator, bikes, etc.?

You might these on generators and valuable bikes.

A. Well where are you?
….At Walmart.....don't leave without the rig.
….At a campground, RV Park, etc. put a lock and cable on them. Not so much for defeating determined thieves but the casual thief.

B. Sight seeing...… lock it up in the bed of the truck and cover it. Out of sight ….. out of mind. We often don't lock the kayaks. It's just too complicated to get them down. I've been hauling things in the back of my truck pretty much since 2002. Nothing has been taken. Of course I routinely avoid high crime areas.

This or something similar, or a piece of chain. Couple one or the other with a really good lock, government grade. Lock the stuff to something permanent difficult to move. That's about all you can do. All locks and chains can be cut. Just buy one that is robust enough to require power tools to defeat. The noise is the deterrent.

We have ours chained with really heavy chain in the back of the truck under the toneau cover and some lighter longer chain and lock for outside. Lighter chain would not need power tools -- hmmm?

I use a heavy chain and quality lock around a nearby tree or anything else that is handy. Always try and put it in a place that is out of sight for walkers by, generally behind the trailer. I have even wrapped the chain around one of the trailers rear stabilizer jacks. It won't prevent a determined thief but it will deter the casual, I want that, passerby.

My neighbor just attaches a rope from his generator to the dobermans collar when they leave the campsite. Despite leaving it in plain site, he has never had a theft

I don't think theft happens as much as we fear.
When I was working, we used 25 Honda 3000's. They were left in public areas or not far from the public. We always used a sturdy chain and padlock.
In all the years, I'm not aware of any walking away.
I keep mine in the truck bed with a hard tonneau and a cable lock. But I usually camp where there's power, so the generator is for oddball stops.

A simple tip is to use a cover that doesn't advertise what's in it. My cover says HONDA in red letters. I'd rather it said "toilet overflow"

Good point - the "leave it in the trailer" is code for put it back where you carry it. Those of us who store in the trailer have LPG fueled generators. Those that run gasoline need an alternate solution - usually the bed of a truck, but some have locking mounting plates, sealed travel containers, or the snake pit (sometimes described as a rope and doberman).

But you knew all that, right? Pat

I like the rope and a Doberman solution.
Unfortunately our big Tibetan Terrier would more likely lick the thief to death.

Hi, I used to keep my generator inside of my trailer [when my tow vehicle was an SUV] and there was no problem what-so-ever in doing this. I now mount my generator in the bed of my truck and that is where it stays.

Dual fuel 2000i.

Inside a 24g ActionPacker with an extra foam seal on the lid, carb drained, cap vent off/closed. Never a problem. 👍
BTW the burb carries 30gal, never exploded, doesn't smell.

Most folks would not be as careful as you, Bob, with gas inside a vehicle IMO, especially in the context of the question about what to do while sightseeing [for part of day one assumes].

BTW, the 24 gal. Action Packer seems to be extinct. I shopped all over and couldn't find one (except at stupid pricing). Home Depot has the 35 gal. size, online, but it's not as easily moved as the 24 gal.
I wonder if Rubbermaid has ceased making them?

Update: Rubbermaid now called United Solutions?

Most campground people are honest and respect property......until the rookies come on the weekend. Still then most of them have their own stuff to worry about and leave yours alone.

When locking generator do not just slip the cable-chain though the handle. The bad guy will use a all saw to cut the handle slip the cable chain off and walk off with your generator. Wrap the generator so they have to cut the cable or chain. That’s why we leave generator inside.
