Spots to Park @ the Beach
I'm new to all of this & just wondering if someone could tell me if there are any unusual or out of the ordinary RV parks(which I'm not crazy about) that have hook-ups near or on the ocean(a view would be nice) where the setting would be fairly private & other trailers weren't on top of you-so to speak. Myrtle Beach comes to mind, ugh ! Are there many places left like this anymore? How far in advance does one have to make reservation? Or, are there places to actually buy in a nice tranquil setting overlooking the sea? I'm talking about either coast, but since I live in NC at this point I'm thinking the East coast. Thanks.

Camping on the Gulf in Destin FL and Emerald Beach in Navarre FL are both, quite literally, right on the gulf.
they're both kinda crowded, and kinda expensive... but for a short stay, the view is awesome.

Sebartian Inlet SP in Melbourne FL is across A1A from the beach but on the water (inlet). Perfect in winter/spring months, beach fishing, surfing and swimming.

Red Coconut is on Fort Myers Beach. I think it is expensive, and the trailers are parked "a handshake away" from each other, but it is ON the Gulf of Mexico. I could easily lob a frisbee into the water from most campsites on the waterside.
I have also camped at Fort DeSoto Park in Pinellas County, near the Skyway Bridge (you remember, the other bridge that collpased). Prices are much more reasonable, and you can get a wooded site on the Gulf, or at least on an inlet to the Gulf. I think I have a photo of it here...

If you mean Ashland, it is down by Grants Pass and Medford near the California border. Ashland is the home of a Shakespeare festival each year.

Lots of state parks in Oregon are on or near the beach. Our favorite was Beachside. You can reserve specific sites. Crescent City, CA has a commercial campground right on the scenic harbor.

Hey Thanks for the posts. Somehow my profile is wrong. I live in Asheville, NC. From these answers, it seems most places are crowded, or trailer to trailer. Not sure this is for me. I love the idea of going & exploring, but I like my privacy & lots of room around me. Peace & quiet, Sounds like maybe Oregon is the best place? Any others?

You can stay instate and go to OBX (Outer Banks) Lots of CG's that are less crowded when you get as far south as Rodanthe/Salvo/Waves. Head down to Hatteras Island and Okracoke and you may have the places all to yourselves.

I'll have to derecommend my half recommendation of Red Coconut. I am not sadistic enough to want my worst enemay to go there, thinking it is anything but a packing house for RV's.

South Carolina and Florida
One of our favorite places within a drive from Asheville was the James County Park 10 minutes from Folly beach in Charleston.
In the Florida panhandle someone else covered Destin, but also St. Josephs park near Apalachocola (sp) was great (and reasonable.) Also Ft. Desota Park in St. Pete.

Camp Hatteras on the Outerbanks around Waves NC is on the beach. No view because of the dunes, but an easy walk to the Ocean in one direction, the Pool(s) in the other direction, and the sound, just a little further.

Go West!
You should leave North Carolina and move Oregon.
North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia all have nice beaches that are not too crowded off season.

We used to live near Charlotte..and I second James County City park. Esp. near the Thanksgiving to Christmas holidays...not a lot of people and they have a great light show and other entertinment. You are a stones throw from Charleston and Folly's beach. A good golf course is just down the road . And if you go to Charleston eat at Hymann's ..voted best seafood in south in Southern Living mag. and our personal favorite ,too.

Levi2,
Some time back, I stayed at a lovely place in Sandbridge, Va.called OutDoor Resorts. That was awesome..You backed right up to the water (called Back Bay) and, across the road from the entrance was the ocean~! Very nice..pricey as well.
Seems I recall this place is a part of a national chain?
Here's a link to their site..(just found it)
Virginia Beach RV Resort, luxury RV park
and, this is the map of the campground..I was at site 91

Edisto Beach in SC is quite nice - the sites are reasonably large and there are many trees. No beach view, but our site had beach sound and a 20 foot walk to the top of the dune that separated the beach from the campground.
Also, Cavendish National Park on PEI is right on the water.

You said that you were thinking East Coast
I stayed at two campgrounds in Virginia Beach Va. One was right on the beach ( sandy with a lot of small trees ) One was just a wide open grassy field away from the beach. I am not sure if either had much in the way of hookups ( I boondock so I can have privacy ) I stayed at another in Kitty Hawk ( right on the beach , no hook ups, no shade ). Might not be exactly what you are looking for but they are close to you. Dave

We second Edisto Beach State Park in SC. Will be there all of Oct if you happen to go, stop and say hi, site 23. Reservations a must for longer stays, a good idea for any stay. A rustic SP campground with e/w, quiet with room to stretch. Beach is never crowded.
