Route to Colonial from Northeast
Hi folks. Does anyone have any advice/reactions to the following route to Colonial? Since it takes us on the GSP for about 71 miles (and if I recall correctly, that's got lots of traffic lights, yes?) I'm wondering if there are alternatives (other than 95 and GWB).
Any thoughts? Low bridges? Other concerns?
Assume starting in Danbury, CT:
· 84 West to 684 (EXIT 20 heading South) about 28 miles
· 287 West, about 18 miles (stay in right lane)
· Exit 14A for Garden State Parkway toward NJ (about 48 miles)
o Use left lanes to keep left @fork to stay on GSP (follow signs for 117/105/Asbury park/South)
o Stay on GSP another 32 miles to exit 91
· Lakewood Brick Twp/Country Road 549 (Exit 91) about 2 miles
· Turn Right on to Rte 88 west about 1.5 miles, Colonial on right

No lights on Garden State Parkway, you have carved out the easiest most direct route from Danbury. Taking NJ 287 South to GsP adds 10 miles and turnpike thru Newark and Elizabeth, not fun. You will be fine. There are construction areas but that is all over. i drove home from Buffalo today, longish but pleasant ride.

Hi Steve,
I would appreciate a report on what you think after you make the trip and your final routing.
Having been thru GWB and on 95 thru NYC, i NEVER want to go thru there again.
Thanks!
Katy

Here's a Thread on the same subject, different direction. The second post is what got me home:

Bottom line, stay off I95. Either I'm getting old an scared, or the drivers on I95 are getting dumber and dumber.

The Parkway should take you right to the Lakewood exit. Just remember it is a toll road and depending on when you are traveling it can get congested with beach traffic.

Katy - it was a breeze. Other than traffic and construction which pops up everywhere - the route couldn't have been easier.
Great vibe at Colonial by the way. More on that in another thread soon....

We picked up our new AS from Colonial in June, 14, and headed north. What I'd recommend is following our route in the opposite direction.
From Danbury take I-84 west to I-87 (NYS Thruway).
I-87 south to I-287 at Suffern.
I-287 south to end (junction I-95) at Woodbridge, stay straight on to NJ 440 (you'll see sign for GSP)
Exit on GSP south
south on GSP to Exit 91
go straight onto CR 549
take right at intersection with Ocean Ave.
Colonial is on the right about 2 blocks.
A lot less fuss going that way. You circumnavigate most of metro NY and North Jersey, all good road (they ought to have those bridges on the GSP fixed by now!)
Google street view is your friend!
Safe travels - Slán abhaile!

Steve and Sue Mac,
Hope the salutation is correct. We like in Rhinebeck, NY and I bought our International Serenity at Colonial. I took the same route going and on return. I recall no obstructions and the ride went pretty fast that day. Traffic is always an issue but such is life in these parts. I did stop at the pay stations though with EZPass I think you can use the high speed lanes. Have a good trip. It's not all that bad when underway. Adam and Ros Geuss
