Road Conditions Websites

I just found this cool Road Conditions website for Oregon. It even has links to the road cams all over the state. It's actually pretty cool to see what's going on around the state, even if you don't plan to drive in it.

tripcheck

Does anyone else know of links to good road conditions websites like this for their state?

No offense to my Atlanta neighbors, but I will go out of my way to avoid the traffic around Atlanta.

When I have to go through Atlanta I usually check Georgia Navigator to see where the traffic snarls are.

Scott

PS: On the plus side, Georgia DOT seems to handle construction and paving better and faster than other states with which I am familiar.

In washington State: http://traffic.wsdot.wa.gov/sno-info/

They have camera views of mountian passes, congestion in metro areas, ferry schedules and other good info. Yesterday we drove over the cascades during a snow storm - they had 2 feet of new snow at the peaks - it was exciting.

My travels take me through several Midwestern states throughout the winter, and I have found the sites linked below to be quite helpful in terms of avoiding hazardous driving conditions due to winter storms, etc.:

Missouri Road Conditions

Iowa Road Conditions

Illinois Road Conditions

DOT web sites

I recently took a trip with a friend and had a demo of onstar in the suburban.
ONSTAR reported the traffic/road conditions for the route we had put in to it based on DOT web sites where available.
Wish this was available for my motorhome.

Update to the 511 system

The Mpls Star-Tribune Sunday travel section 8 days ago had the following:

"Next year Tennessee will become the latest state to adopt the telephone number 511 as a way to provide real-time travel information. The automated 511 system is already working in 21 places around the country (including Minnesota), providing reports on local traffic delays, road closures, weather problems, mass transit and other travel information.

"The services connect to live operators in the region who can send you a biking map for California's Napa Valley or winter updates on icy roads in Vermont.

"Many of the 511 lines can be accessed from out of state by dialing 10-digit numbers, often toll-free. (You'll find a list of these numbers at http://www.deploy511.org if you click on "National Progress Report" and scroll to page 6.)

"Tennesee's system is expected to be available in September 2005. Currently, you can get 511 information in these areas: Arizona, Orlando and southeast Florida, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky and northern Kentucky/Cincinnati, Maine, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oregon, San Francisco, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, and Washington state."

Associated Press

Harumph -- danged if I can't scroll to page 6 as instructed. The 'Links' option along the left looks like the place to go for each state's information.

That 511 map sure makes GA look like it doesn't have any reporting but it does and has and it predates 511 idea.

The http://www.georgia-navigator.com/ posted above is excelent and it also provides these.
FOR PDA's: http://mynav.georgia-navigator.com/www/pda
FOR WEB-ENABLED PHONES: http://mynav.georgia-navigator.com/www/wml

*DOT will also get you traffic on your cell phone while driving in GA.
GA was on the band wagon before there was a bandwagon. They have their well establised sites and channels and changing to 511 has been fought as a result. Those of us that deal with it daily Are use to what we have and don't need you yankees telling us how to do it LOL.

Atlanta is the SE Hub and Everything that moves comes through here at some point. We that live here hate it as well. When I moved here in 79 they were still building the loop. I 75/85 through down town was still 2 lanes in many places. Now it's 7 lanes at its widest.

For all our traffic problems your still going to find North GA has some of the best maintained roads anywhere. You will still have your teeth when you leave.

I'd noticed this before with states' Department of Natural Resources websites. For Dept's of Transportation, look at the webpage and URL of http://www.dot.state.mn.us/. Now go up there and put in your state's two-letter abbreviation in place of Minnesota's 'mn.' It works for many states -- then it is up to the wayfarin' researcher to make sense of the information on the site.

Just a quick sampling of a dozen or so found it didn't work for California or New Hampshire -- figures! (Ford or Chevy!! Ford or Chevy!!)

I drove south on the east wall in sept '69 before it was opened to bypass the traffic on the connector. luckily I was not ticketed for it.
