Oklahoma mountains
Just returned from a trip to Eureka Springs to play banjo over Labor Day. We took my favorite route NE on US79 from Austin to Henderson, TX, and then north on US259 and US59 through the eastern Oklahoma mountains. The photos were taken at the Three Sticks monument, on top of the highest ridge enroute, overlooking the Ouichita National Forest. Most folks don't think of a view like this when they think of Oklahoma.
The Duramax took the rig up the mountain grade in 4th gear at 55 mph, limited by the curves, not by available power. On the north-side descent, a series of hairpin turns, the automatic downshift of the Allison in tow/haul mode limited our speed such that I needed very little braking to get down.
We stopped overnight at the Cherokee Landing Airstream Park by Tenkiller Ferry Lake in extreme NE Oklahoma. Super friendly folks and a full hookup for $10.
