Originally the national parks were established with the wealthy in mind. This was before social change which included 40 hour weeks and vacations. They were served by the railroads who played a great part in building the lodges. This was when guests stayed for weeks, not days. Along with the Model T the parks became accessible for the middle class, of which I am a proud member. And the pendulum swings.
I would love to stay in one of the great lodges. Yellowstone in winter is on my bucket list, but still pricey.
