GMC/Chevy Towing Mirrors

Has anyone had experience repairing the extension towing mirrors on a 2003 GMC or Chevy? I'm hesitant to take the mirror apart until I know a little more about what to expect. The right mirror will only move in or out with a slight manual assist to get it moving. The driver's side has never been a problem. The motor runs - but it acts like a possible "clutch" assembly is slipping too easily. There may have been a "recall" on these mirrors but I haven't been able to locate any info.

I had the same problem with mine when I first got it . Took it to the dealer and the sevice manager made some adjustment behind the mirror without taking it apart , not sure where , that lasted about a month . I noticed they work when it was raining , but not dry . So just for kicks I angled the mirrors all the way in and sprayed it good with silicon , then all the way out and sprayed again . That was 3 years ago and they are still working . I also try to work them once a month for exercise . Try it and let me know if you have the same results . Good luck

cracker--my son is the shop foreman in a chev dealer at home. i'll send him an E and see if there a re repair parts avail or if a recall does exist--pieman

I checked the gm service advisory site and found a tech bulletin #03-08-64-028 .It states that parts are available without replacing the whole mirror and gives a breakdown of the mirror with instructions on how to fix it.I have not figured out how to download from it yet. The site is the same one the dealers use for their service techs. It has service manuals for allmost every vehicle made. You subscribe to it for 24$ a year.It is basically like a chilton or haynes repair manual on yoir computer with step by step repair guides with picturres.The site is alldatadiy.com
It is worth every penny. It has all the info on diesels, transmissions etc

That's interesting - re the raining vs dry! This is the first real problem I've had with the mirrors and it happened just after I came home from the car wash. I was thinking that it might have been due to the mirror being wet - as I sprayed it with the high-pressure rinse. Live and Learn! I do exercise the mirrors regularly. For the record - I assume you are referring to the "extension" part of the mechanism. I've never had any problem with the tilt and pan mechanism.

That is correct , it seems to be a fairly common problem.
