Nice. Apparently the State Department which issues Passports and the Department of Homeland Insecurity which supposedly is in charge or border insecurity don't talk to each other. Anyway according to news reports I've heard implementation of the Passport requirement for Canada/Mexico has been delayed until June 2009. You need a photo ID along with Birth Certificate to return to the USA. There may be other acceptable documents other than a Birth Certificate but I have no clue what they might be.

My wife and I happened to be at the border yesterday to renew our NEXUS (rapid entry to USA and Canada). In the information package they included the following:

It is pretty clear on what is required to travel to and from the USA and Canada. This is a US Customs and Border Protection document revised as of January, 2008.
