Monroe County (all of the Keys) prohibits boondocking, even with permission of a property owner. People occasionally get away with it but seldom for more than an overnight.
Basically, unless you are ridiculously lucky and stumble across a cancellation in one of the State Parks, you just have to pony up the big bucks to stay in a commercial campground.
Every year I go through the reservation routine — 11 months to the day before I would like to camp in the keys I get up early, get online with the reservations website and try to hit the “reserve” button at exactly 0800. Successful about 10% of the time…
Everybody wants to be there and I can’t blame them.
