Maintaining Ducted Air Filters

The ducted air system has filters that need to be maintained regularly. Their performance can be improved to help keep your interior air clean.

To remove the filter, pull down on the end of the vent with your fingertips. It will be tight, but it should come out. The vent and foam filter will be dirty, so wash them in soapy water. To improve the filter, I used a material called Allertech VentGuard, and cut the new filter using the old filter as a pattern. Replace the vent cover, making sure that the filter stays in place. The new filters will collect a lot of dust and dirt, so be sure to check and replace them with new ones on a schedule, at least once a year.

Some photos showing the process are attached:

Enjoy the clean air!

Looks like a good upgrade in material, our experience has been that even with minimal use of A/C the evaporator gets dirty fairly quickly, shown in photo prior to carefully cleaning with vacuum and brush attachment.

While in Colorado recently and got hit with some smoky days, I jury rigged some HEPA filters over the inlets (return air) to filter interior air. Worked pretty well and had no noticeable effect on flow even with an outlet register removed to increase cool air flow volume.

I am planning on replacing the two return air registers with a 12x12 return register that I can use conventional a/c filter panels in.
