years ago I used to work t the seven seas seafood restaurant in Lake charles. There was a boat place...seems like west= over the bridge...you would go over the bridge and go off or under south and there was a bait shop, and lots of boats and I wonder if there was a rv park down there...I tell my friends they havent really lived until they lived in La. One day would like to get back down there...they used to joke with me and say..'thibideax! thibideax, there's a hole in tha pee-row!

Well if you want to talk about REALLY going down the bayou....I think I have a heads up on that one. I am from a town called Cocodrie/Robinson Canal....if anyone followed where the Hurricane Gustave just ripped thorough that would be my home town. That would be basically right off of the Gulf Of Mexico. Now living way UP the bayou in Kentucky.

I found yall!
Hello yall!
I am currently in Opelousas and looking for some resources on my 65 Caravel.
As you know being in South Lousiana without A/C when summer monts come can be challenging to say the least.
My Caravel does not have an A/C, and when the temps get up there the portable I bought can't keep up.
I planned in getting one installed and have a great shop, but its outside of Fayetteville Arkansas. I will drive if I have to, but hoped to find something closer.
I found a Dometic Brisk Air 2 13,500 BTU online, used..
Wondering if I should buy it and also wondering if there are any shops closer I could locate to do the work? I was told the wiring can be more complicated, so I want to find an Airstream expert if possible!
Thank you for this group!

Hello from snowy Colorado. 20F here this morning and 4' of snow in front of my 69 Globetrotter. You are right, the heat and humidity in the lush tropics of the southwest USA can be miserable. Installing a AC in your Caravel would likely increase its value, maybe by the cost of the unit. Other folks will confirm or correct, but I understand Airstream installed a wire close to the distribution panel and routed close to the roof position of a future AC. Maybe so dealers could install one if the customer ordered it. But I do not know for sure.
Here is a photo of my former 66 Trade Wind 24 foot which I renovated. It was a twin bed, rear bath layout. And it had an old AC that still worked. There were major changes in the 1966 model year, mainly the windows. I like the vintage Airstreams.
Good luck with your project.
David

The photo below is of the Airstream Specification Page for Air Conditioner placement in the era Airstream that you have. Note that unlike most brand X travel trailers, Airstream did not use an existing vent opening for the air conditioner, rather it was installed a measured distance from the number one rib/bow which required cutting the hole(s) for the air conditioner. The pre-wire and condesate drain tube are typically coiled very near that point in the roof so that they can be easily fished to the opening once it is cut.

The wiring wouldn't concern me as much as the skills of the person cutting the hole in the roof. The wire for the air conditioner should already be hanging near your 120-Volt AC Circuit Breaker Panel (if not within the panel waiting for a breaker to be added), and the other end of the cable should be immediately accessible to the opening when cut as directed in the factory data sheet.
I know that getting an air conditioner installed was my first project after I purchased my 1978 Minuet from its original owner who did not care for air conditioning. I find traveling in the Southern portion of the Midwest during the summer unbearable without air conditioning.
Good luck with your project!
Kevin

When I installed a new AC in the wife's 86 Limited, I found the AC hole in the roof rather inadequate to support the weight of the AC. I added a framework between the roof "shape formers" to support the weight and the "bouncing" of the AC while towing. So you are wise to get a pro to install the thing and one who has experience at it.
