Hello from NC

Greetings to all,
My wife and I have just purchased a 1965 Safari (I'll post pix later) that's completely FILTHY (a home only for mice these past 20 years!) but all original otherwise. We can't wait to get 'er home and start the fix-up process.

Only problem: NO TITLE!

We have a notarized bill of sale from the guy who had it, but he bought it from the family of the original owner, a man who passed away almost 20 years ago. There is no title, but paperwork in the trailer had the title and VIN numbers, along with all the receipts for everything he ever put into her.

We have called the DMV, and they have not been helpful in giving us any real instruction about how to get this titled and registered. I wonder if anyone has had such an experience that can offer any advice.

Whatever happens, I'm looking forward to participating in the community.

Welcome!

Interesting beginnings ... what if when the time comes you go to DMV and say "I'd like to put tags on this trailer I built."?

Welcome to the forum!

Depending on what state you purchased it at, it could be easy or it could be difficult to get a title. If you bought it in NC, it's difficult to impossible unless you can find the prior owner and they are willing to apply for a duplicate title and they will sign it over to you.
Since the prior owner(s) is diseased, if they were a NC resident, you will have to find the executor of their estate to negotiate this.
Right now, bill of sale or not, in the eyes of the NC government you do not own that trailer, and possibly you may be considered an accessory to a thief if the person who sold it was not truthful with you.
You might want to read through the NC General Statutes regarding vehicle registration at this weblink:
GS_20-52

This is a link to the application you will need to take to the DMV.

Good luck. I hope you are successful!

ps: when you talk to the DMV tell them you bought an "abandoned" trailer from the landowner where the trailer was left/abandoned. You may be able to get a provisional title this way. Even with a provisional title, there is a waiting period before your ownership is valid. This will allow any legitimate owner (an heir) to claim ownership during that waiting period. You might want to wait before spending $.

Dave,

I'm not able to offer any fruitful advice. Just wanted to welcome you. However, I've heard from folks having issues with boat and in my case, a 'homemade' raft trailer, due to volume the guy makes or something. Title took ten minutes in my case. I'm sure between the homemade, salvaged, etc ideas you will be good to go.

Wonderful folks here, without question. There is a rally coming up in October named Alumalina. It's in SC in mountains and nearly 100 Airstreams will be there. Great opportunity for you guys to talk restoration, and see various campers, including vintage I'm sure.

My wife and I are hoping to buy our first soon, so we are going empty handed if you will. Still, the event organizer among others welcomed, encouraged even, us to attend. Wife requested that weekend off at work yesterday. We are so excited. Just starving for insights.

You can find out more on the Alumalina thread in the Rally sub forum here. Hope to see you there. Sounds like a great gathering.

There is going to be a special place in ( well you know where) for non-helpful DMV drones !

Welcome Dave & Debbie. They can create a new title for it, I think they will just look for a lien and if the vin says if its ever been reported stolen ( which it's not) .
I have a cousin that lives in Fuquay just south of Holly springs. Nice area.
Was your trailer kept inside a barn or shed ?

Have a good one!

The manual shown at this web link might be helpful for you to understand what you need to do. When I was trying to title a vehicle without a title from out of state, the agent at the NC License Agency told me that she used this manual to understand what she should do.
https://connect.ncdot.gov/business/d...e%20manual.pdf

Another thing you will find in this manual about licensing requirements for your tow vehicle - When you purchase the weighted license for the tow vehicle you only need to include the weight of the trailer that bears on the tow vehicle, not the entire weight of the trailer. (see Section 2 - Chapter 1 - Page 3 - Camping Trailers and 5th Wheels)
Some states do not have this weight exemption. I printed a copy of this page of the manual and keep it with my registration card in case I happen to be questioned when I'm out of state.

I hope they're piled up right there with telemarketers, SPAM emailers, and non English speaking Dell Computer customer service reps in India.
