Got my project now the fun begins

Hello, I finally found a trailer have been lurking here for a while. I got my 1971 Soveriegn International home this last weekend five hundred miles no major problems.I bought it just off of pictures and phone calls was expecting the worst but was better than expected. I planned on replacing the flooring and I can weld so frame work isn't a problem either. I put some before pictures in my gallery. It is in pretty good shape need to gut it and get rid of the musty smell. I restore and rod cars for a living so this will become my living quarters after done while I build a shop for myself. The flooring is actually really solid but we shall see shortly I know the frame probably has some rust though. I look forward to getting it going and am sure I will be asking questions shortly.

Hi Smuzz, I'm about two weeks ahead of you I should be uploading some new pic's soon myself.

I found rot in the rear floor under a leaking tail light assem.

I see in your pic's some corrosion around the lower body strip, That must be moisture.

I assume your gutting it? then you can really check everything.

In looking through these forums over the past month it looks like 95% of the floor problems are from leaks, so after I replace the section in my rear floor I am putting a 6oz layer of fiberglass over the entire floor with epoxy resin. It will only add about 20lbs or 35 with two layers.

That I believe this will prevent any future floor rot and preserve the trailer for another 25 years. (unless the rot is somehow from underneath)

I'm also making a fiberglass bathroom floor pan with a floor drain.

It's not a big deal with fiberglass, I'm making a perimeter around the bath floor with some 1" wood, then lay the fiberglass on the floor and lap it up and over the 1" wood, you now have a water tight pan that will not let any water on the main floor when you get out of the shower or if the toilet has a problem. Any water that may accumulate will go down the drain thru the belly pan or banana skin.

I'll post pic's in about 10 days when it should be done.

I am also in the midst of a 70's Soveriegn redo. Its been fun work since June. Coming along well and last night after the gaucho was put back in ( finally) me and the dog sat out there awhile contmeplating world problems and drinking a cold one. Nice.

Thanks for all the advice I have been reading post here for awhile. I just finished taking the badly tinted window film off some of the window just to see if the were going to be hazy or not. They look real good and clear so I am happy. Also have been trashing alot of the previous owners stuff left it the trailer some things I will not mention here.

ALANSD I finished reading your full monty thread last night looks great hope to be right where you are in a couple of months. Will hopefully be starting one of my own shortly.

mine was not quite a FULL deal, many have gone way further than me. But I have enjoyed personalizing and redoing.
I just finsihed the insert trim and rubrail. I hope to finish restriping this weekend, and get the bread box looking vent cover off my roof.

ALANSD I still haven't decided to whether I am going to take the shell off or not may just have to decide when I get that far. I read how people lift the shell and all seem a little risky to me with a 31ft trailer. I have the space and a couple tractors with front end loaders. I think you have went about as far as you can go without taking the shell off. That is probably the route I will end up taking.
