Hello everyone. I guess Ive gotten sucked into the A.S. craze. I was looking at an old Shasta to rebuild when I was offered a 1973 Safari which I just couldn't pass up. The shell is in excellent shape, the A.C. blows cold so at least I have a good base to start with. I bought it on 8/09/08. I found a termite trail under the gaucho in the front. So far I have pulled the gaucho, stove, counter top, carpet, and interior panels. It seams to me they had a taste for the carpet strips. I still have to replace the two forward sheets of ply wood. I'm also going to pull the Suburban furnace so I can build a queen sized dinette sleeper. I'[ll lose counter space and I'll have to get a single sink but it will be worth the room for sleeping. Also building bunks on each side in the middle. I'm glad I found this forum. It's been very helpful so far.

One question though ( probably a stupid one) Where is the breaker box
for this unit?

Howdy aaumpine -- welcome to the forums! There probably is an old humming inverter somewhere close to the battery. There's usually a small fuse panel in this immediate area. I've taken a '74 apart but that doesn't give me solid knowledge about a '63. Hang in there -- somebody will post with that first hand experience.

Thanks for the welcome. I didn't work at all on the AS this evening but I did check for water leaks. It was raining pretty hard but I found no leaks. I know one of the front windows leak from the staining and the fact that it holds about a 5 inch water level between the panes. Are there any other place or places that are prone to leaking?

Also, I've read several times on the forum of axle problems. What should I look for?

I also will be taking pictures when i find my camera. My one year old has a fondness for anything small and electronic. Will post pics soon.

Welcome to the AS group. I had a 71 27' and the fuse panel was rear, curbside. The fuse box is about 6" x 8" x3". The battery was in the rear trunk behind the rear bath.

Sorry you said breakers,it is 1-twin floor pan under street side bed just in front of shower,2-double floor plan same place ,but in cabinet.Hope this helps.Dave

I went straight the Safari this morning with jr mag-lite in hand. (kinda CSI). I found my breaker box in the bathroom closet . I also found another window leaking. It's the non functional one beside the door. I'm glad i still have it apart or I don't think I would have found it. So far my extra time has been used reading this sight. Extremely helpful. Thanks to all who have replied.

On another note. I will be removing the Suburban furnace as well as the closets and bottom cabinetry opposite the twin bed to install bunks. I have an 8yr old, a 7yr old and a rambunctious 1 yr old that have to sleep somewhere. Anyone interested in the extra parts? Maybe we can make some kinda deal. I'll try to post obligatory pics this evening.

The inverter was in the bathroom closet as well as the breaker box. Can't wait till this weekend so I can finish ripping the carpet out and I'm able to fiish my inspection. I got a look at the exterior top today. I didn't like what I saw. It looks like a galvaized plate was used as a patch to cover the spot where the antenna used to be and some type of tape was used. I'll get a better look tomorrow.
