Liability Insurance

Greetings!
I live in a gated community in Florida. My Airstream Sport 22FB is stored in the community "boatyard".
The HOA requires "liability insurance" for anything parked in the boatyard.
If my trailer is parked in my driveway, my homeowners policy covers liability.
Likewise, if I'm hitched up, my automobile policy covers liability.
Neither policy, though, provides coverage when I'm unhitched. Same thing with my Good Sam RV insurance. I have been unable to find coverage for liability while parked in the boatyard.

Has anyone else had this issue and, if so, did you find a solution?

That's interesting...we have our auto policy through MetLife. When we bought our Airstream last November, we added it to our auto policy...it is costing us around $600/year. The original plan was to keep the trailer in our driveway. We have since found storage (covered with three walls and an open front) where we will keep it beginning in May. The facility is clear in their contract that they have NO insurance to cover my trailer.

Naturally, I contacted MetLife to be sure we will still be protected when the trailer its no longer in our driveway.

Their answer was "yes."

I believe what Pete is refering to is adding the trailer as an endorsement to his auto policy. Some carriers do sell these. As Pete did, make sure the endorsement covers liability and not just damage to the trailer when disconnected.

Two thoughts...

1) Some homeowners policies cover liability for things off your home property. For example, one of your kids leaves a bicycle in the middle of the street somewhere and causes an accident.

2) We have an umbrella policy which covers liability issues caused by us and/or our property where ever we are, within policy limits. It picks up where our auto policy stops for many things.

Both of these might be options for you. Best to ask your insurance agent.

We insure our truck with USAA and the AS with Progressive (USAA doesn't offer stand alone coverage, but works with Progressive to provide it). Progressive provides complete coverage for our AS. Not sure what kind of policy you have with Good Sam, but I would also recommend contacting an insurance company to discussion your needs.
