Oil capacity for 1977 Argosy with 454, according to original manual
My original manual says the 454 takes 12 quarts plus another for the filter. A total of 13 quarts! This seems ridiculous since most 454s take 7-8 quarts, but that is what it says. I've attached a picture of the fluid capacities from the original manual. Any feedback would be much appreciated since this seems to defy reason. When I fill it with 13 quarts, oil pressure reads nominal and dipstick reads full.

Look again, it says pints not quarts. I just changed the oil in my 77 with a 454 and it certainly will not hold 12 quarts. It was 6 quarts

Thanks for pointing out the obvious, I could have done some damage . I've never thought of oil in pints, only quarts. I guess they thought differently in the 70s. My motor slowly burns oil, Do you think its OK to leave 8 quarts in there, or is that pushing it? What kind of tolerance is there for extra oil?

I wouldn't add more than about a pint extra at the most.

For others who come looking for capacities (as I did)... the owner's manual for my 1975 Argosy 24 with the Chevy P30 454 says 4 quarts plus 1 more for the filter (5 quarts total). It's convenient that the oil comes in 5 quart containers.
I'm using Mobil1 10W30 High Mileage Full Synthetic with a Purolator PL34631 filter. I asked the guy at AdvancedAuto if the computer listed a larger capacity filter I could use, but he said no. The other guy standing there commented that this is the largest filter for the P30 chassis; he said you can buy a smaller one, but not a bigger one. I assume he is wrong and you can actually get a larger capacity filter, but at least I know the PL3463 is the "standard" large filter. I am wondering, however, if this filter is larger than the *original* filter and thus will require a bit more oil. I guess I will find out in about 10 minutes when I put oil back in the motor!

If you go to the Wix filter site you can look up the filter and get the specs. https://www.wixfilters.com/Lookup/Pa...px?Part=156755
With the gasket and thread sizes you can search by size to see if there is a same size with a longer can. It takes some time but there are many filter applications that might meet your needs. You could also go to a remote mount to use any filter or even a double filter mount.

Yeah... I started to go down the rabbit hole on oilfilter-crossreference.com with all the possibilities, but then decided it would be best to stick with the original equipment to make things easier to find on the road. Incidentally, the filter that I took off was a Cam2 C40, which I guess is a company right here in Denver (the filter was actually stamped "made in Denver, CO").

And that is an extremely deep rabbit hole.
