Oil capacity 454

Hi everyone,

I have searched past posts re oil capacity but none mention oil capacity with coolers.
My problem - original dip stick was not in the engine when I bought the coach and the replacement one I found is not from a GM BB. I drained the oil, changed filter to a tall and put in 5 quarts. With the oil cooler and associated lines I am thinking maybe 6 or 7 is likely best?
I will mark dipstick levels (low and full) once I figure out.

Thoughts?

Jim

Measure what you took out including draining the filter and you should be safe if engine was showing normal oil pressure before the change except you changed to tall filter then either add a quart more or fill the filter before installing.I have found add on oil coolers on my 454 and it would be hard to include them as from there location I doubt that they drain when the oil is changed.

7 quarts sounds right to me. It's all contained in the Motorhome chassis guide and service manual in the links on the parts thread I created a few weeks ago. You've also got the synthetic, sae30, 10w-40 debate to contend with. You'll find more detail on that in the service manual.

Original manual says 12 quarts + 1 for filter

My original manual says the 454 takes 12 quarts plus another for the filter. A total of 13 quarts! This seems ridiculous since most 454s take 7-8 quarts, but that what it says. Ive attached a picture of the fluid capacities from the original manual. Any feedback would be much appreciated since this seems to defy reason. When I fill it with 13 quarts, oil pressure reads nominal and dipstick reads full.

My Holiday Rambler 1990 454 took 8 qts with filter.

It showed just over the fill line.
