Rally In Vicksburg MS This Weekend ??

We are planning to make a run to Vicksburg this weekend as my son is out of school all next week and the wife can get a few days off. When I called Magnolia RV Park for a reservation I was told a group of Airstreams was coming in this weekend, she made it sound to be vintage trailers. I have searched all sites and have not found one mention of a Rally there this weekend; it is Easter so most people are close to home. Has anyone heard of any activities going on in Vicksburg?

Thanks Jim

Huh?

Hey, wait a minute- I'm IN Vicksburg. We aren't really into rallys but either way, I haven't/didn't hear anything.
How was your trip?

Sorry about making this thread resemble a ball of twine, but I am in the area (Destin now - Huntington Beach SP - , heading to Mystic Springs on Sat, then ?

I'll be returning home via the Natchez Trace. Should I make a swing through Vicksburg?

Thanks - Pat

Vicksburg

I guess I won't be considered for the Vicksburg Visitors Center Spokesman by saying, well, stop by if you have some time. A couple of riverboat Casino's are ok and if you have any interest in the Civil War, Vicksburg has one of the better parks I've seen. You could easily spend a whole day in the 15 mile park then camp at one of the casinos (don't ask me which one though, I don't camp here for the obvious reason). From the I-20/Natchez Trace intersection it's about 40 minutes to the attractions. Stay in the left lane from Bovina to the Big Black River because the concrete interstate is really rough in the right lane.
Free camping is on the Trace at Rocky Springs, covered in the Boondocking section of the fourm.
Plan on spending some time in Natchez (avoid Sunday, it's dead).

I just returned from Vicksburg, very nice area. It turned out it was the Classic Airstream Club doing a Caravan of the Natchez Trace. We stayed at the Magnolia RV park which is nice, sites are tight. Park is clean with a great fenced dog run.

We visited the Vicksburg National Military Park which is very nice. The court house museum is very nice and interesting.

Interest in the Civil War? (In some quarters known as the War of Northern Agression)? I'm from Virginia, for Pete's sake!

Pant. Pant. Ok I'm back. I think it would be interesting to see what they have to offer. I'm always impressed by our NPS offerings.

But I'll take your suggestion that I shouldn't plan for much time there. Thanks!

Pat,

On our way back from Tampa with the Liner, we drove through the park. I found it very interesting, the exhibits throughout the park explain what was happening during the seige. There are many monuments to the divisions who fought there, however I think, like Gettysburg mainly Union. The Cairo was raised from the Mississippi and is on display in the park. Rich Luhr mentions the park in his blog late last year.

If you are a Civil War, or War of Northern Aggresion, buff you can spent a great deal of time there.

Also, Vicksburg has the first Coca Cola bottling plant.

The park represents both sides of the conflict.tHE Union monuments are more plentiful and grander I think that is because after the war the Union organizations were able to raise more funds for the projects. I would suggest the Old Court House Museum. The actual court room and the table at which Jefferson Davis sat during his suite to regain his property after the war is on display, you can sit at it . The Museum gift shop has artifacts for sale, as the resident historian told me just dig in your flower bed and something will pop up.

I did not go to the Coke Cola museum but from what I understand it was the first place Coke was bottled. The proprietor bottled drinks and just added Coke to the mix so I don’t believe it was a official bottling plant.

ya'll r smart

I always am amazed that the visitors to this area know so much. The Corps of Engineers used to have public tours of their main headquarters, also located in Vicksburg. Too bad it's not possible to see the cool stuff they have such as the scale model of the 14th street canal in New Orleans. It shows exactly what didn't happened in Katrina and started a line of testing that exposed the real reason. One of the offsite locations has a huge scale model of the entire Mississippi River Basin built during WW2 by POW's
BTW- This afternoon I passed two new(er) Airstreams headed west toward V'Burg on I-20
