Electric frig to 2 way?

My Airstream motor home has an electric only frig. Very inefficient for boondocking. Is it possible to exchange it for a 2 way without too much trouble? Would this allow me to boondock as I choose?

Hi, Dena. Given that you have an Interstate GT, the B-van subforum might bear more fruit for you with these kinds of questions.

A recent thread there called Two Way Refrigerator? basically asks your same question and for the same reasons. It's a long read, but very revealing in multiple respects.

Edit: If you read that referenced thread, you'll notice that I started out being very pro-3-way, but evolved into ditching the propane refrigerator technology entirely (the thread transpires across multiple months). It was a real-time evolution of thought and experience that hopefully adds to the perspective that the thread has the potential to convey.

I assume from the fact that the OP has an Interstate that we're talking about a highly-efficient 12V Danfoss fridge, not a Wal-Mart dorm fridge like one often finds in vintage units. If that's the case, it's probably a better investment of time and money to put the $2500ish you'd spend on a new fridge into a solar upgrade. Danfoss fridges are very nice, they work better than absorption-cycle fridges.

We just installed an Isotherm ( Italian ) used mostly in sailboats. Electric only and draws 3amps. It's a very high quality unit and well made.

We considered Isotherm but chose Vitrifrigo for the larger freezer, which I have come to absolutely love. Here's a reproduction of the comparison chart I made. It includes the original Dometic with which the rig was delivered. We did have to re-work our cabinetry a bit.
