1970 Ambassador tank question

In a break from my normal thread regarding replacing the rear floor of our 1970 Ambassador, I have a quick question for you tank experts...

The pics below are of the only tank that came out of the Ambassador. If the setup is not original, it would be really surprising...

It is very clear from inspection that the pipe that got cut (just before the tank valve) is the drain from the galley sink, the bath sink and the shower. These also clearly attach after the valve, so there is no "holding" of that grey water.

Was that a "thing" in 1970 (to let the grey water drain out of the valve)? If the tank is intact, it could make my plan (to use the existing tank only for the toilet) fairly straightforward, since it seems to be set up that way now.

I am assuming that in this day and age it is required at most places to connect a tote for that grey water.

David, I believe the first year Airstream started installing gray tanks was 1974. There may have been a few exceptions on the larger trailers in 1973. Your making great progress on your project. Take care, Bubba

In 1970 thee was no grey tank and your assumption that it ran out the sewer connection is correct.

Airstream started gray tanks in the mid 70s and they were small. Some vintage owners have added gray tanks and some still use gray water totes.

A Blueboy, or some sort of tote is required. I’m not an expert on the 70s, but the configuration makes sense for the era. At the stage you’re at, adding a gray tank wouldn’t be that difficult. A tote can be an added inconvenience since you have to stop at the dump station anyway for your black tank. I’m sure someone will chime in on authenticating your existing tank confit. You are correct in your assumption, David. Your grey water plumbing is typical of the era. My '70 Safari is plumbed the same way, with the grey water plumbing draining after the black tank valve. In those days it was acceptable to let the grey water drain onto the ground. Today we must use portable totes.

Hi All,
Thanks for the prompt replies! I will probably add a grey tank a bit later, even though it will be a much bigger hassle than doing it now...
For now, it is nice to know that the black tank is just that, I will buy a tote and plumb the rest accordingly.

Hello David, your setup was normal until mid-70's. Use of a blueboy was new, mostly yoj drained your grey through a hose away from your camp and neighbors. Still able to in some locals. Kurt
