1958 Flying Cloud Number 2210- Who owned it?
Any help is appreciated!! I recently bought this trailer and it has every option known to man. We are actively restoring it to its original splendor keeping it original with all the original appliances, etc.
It is VIN 8493. We did not think it had caravan numbers until we started polishing it. This afternoon we could see clear traces of 2210 and "Wally Byam Caravan" under it.
Could someone help with the history?

I've always been curious of its history, however after discovering it was not as old as the trailer, i decided to look for something more interesting.
I have since changed my number to 1936 as this was the first year that Airstream made the rivetted aluminum bodies. I was quite surprised that I was able to get it as I would have thought the Factory would have reserved that for themselves. Anyway, would you mind looking up both of these for me?
Thanks,
Colin
PS I am often confronted by people in gas stations saying that my trailer is in great shape for a 36....................it's a 59 Ambassador

Hi Colin,
Since the questions are piling up, I guess I'll try to answer a couple tonight, starting with yours.
You are correct that #10247 was not first assigned in 1959 when your Ambassador was made. It was first assigned in 1964, but the first Membership Directory I have after that is 1966. From that point forward, here is what I found for #10247:
1966-68: Martin and Edna Potter of Jacksonville, FL, no caravans.
1969-72: Ernest and Zetta Barnes of Sheridan WY, no caravans.
1973-75: Unassigned.
1976-78: Leonard and Edith Telford of Greenvill, TX, no caravans.
1979-81: Unassigned.
1982-86: JC and Doris Kraay of Owatonna, MN in 1982-86, no caravans.
1987-89: Unassigned.
1990: Roland and Aurore Boulanger or Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada,
1991-2001: Unassigned.
2002+: You
I think #10247 has the most different assignees of any number I have yet researched: 6. Congrats on that. Given that you are in NY and none of the prior assignees were from anywhere near NY, I cannot guess who may have owned your '59 Ambassador.
That's all I got. Enjoy!

Hi airstrmkids,
#16266 was first assigned in 1966, but would first have shown in the 1967 Directory (membership as of 12/31/1966). I am missing that one. In the 1968 Directory (membership as of 12/31/1967), #16266 is assigned to Donald and Verval Jenson of Ft. Dodge, IA. The Jensens are last listed in 2000. They are listed for one caravan: R-108 - Dixie Adventure, Region 8, 1988.
I am guessing that the Jensens are your parents are probably were the original assignees of #10247 in 1966. Otherwise, they got the number the very next year in 1967. It looks like a two owner number, your parents and you. Enjoy!

Hi Bruno,
This will be my last one tonight. And no, there are no web sites to check for this information, nor no private computer databases. I have to manually search old paper membership directories. I have a fairly complete set of Directories from 1966 to current (only missing three), but very few earlier than that.
#5927 was first assigned in 1961. In my 1966 and 1968 Directories this number is assigned to Allen and Amber Dicke of New Bremen, OH. They could not have owned your 1971 Overlander.
In 1969-1996, #5927 was assigned to Terry and Ruth Boyce of Denver Colorado (in 1969) and Independence, Missouri (in 1996). The Boyces are listed as having participated in unspecified post International Rally caravans in 1973, 1974, and 1975. It would seem likely that the Boyces may have owned your 1971 Overlander.
#5927 is then unassigned in 1997, before being assigned to Bud and Pat Lynch of Cathage, Missouri in 1998. It is possible that the Lynch's bought an Airstream from the Boyces, since they are from the same state, but there is no way to tell if it was your 1971 Overlander.
#5927 was then unassigned in 1999-2000, before being assigned to a couple named Todd from Greer, South Carolina in 2001 and yet others more recently. I am withholding these later names for privacy reasons. I doubt these later assignees owned your '71 Overlander, but cannot prove they didn't.
I hope this information helps!

Hi Brian, I previously missed your post. I am from the east side of Michigan and have never camped in the western area you are asking about so I unfortunately cannot offer any help.

Hi Joe, A friend without a computer has asked if I could find out who had the number 20333. It's on a 68 Overlander. He has had it since 1982 with the original number.
Thanks

Hi Brian,
#4660 was first assigned in 1961, but for your trailer we really don't need to consider years before it was made. #4660 was assigned to Joe and Mary Holloway of Phoenix, AZ, no caravans, at least from 1968 to 1973. I have no 1974 Directory, but #4660 is unassigned in 1975.
In 1976-79, #4660 is assigned to Williman and Mary Mattingly of Overland, MO, no caravans. It is then unassigned from 1980-82, before being reassigned to William and Mary Mattingly again in 1983, in Klamath Falls, OR, no caravans. It is then unassigned again in 1984-86.
#4660 is then assigned in 1987-97 to Finn and Beverley Billehaug of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada (1987) and Peachland, British Columbia, Canada (1997), no caravans. It was then unassigned from 1998-2001. It has been assigned to a couple from Jersey Shore, PA from 2002-current.
It would seem likely that the Billehaugs owned your '73 Tradewind, since you are also from BC.
It is possible that the Mattinglys also owned your trailer if the distance from Klamath Falls to Winnipeg is not too great (didn't look it up), but there is probably no way to confirm or disprove it unless you find paperwork or decals on the trailer that link it to Missouri or Oregon.
I doubt the Holloways owned your trailer because that would have meant they upgraded to a new trailer a year or so before they quit the club. But I caution that while I consider this unlikely, it certainly is possible. These are only guesses, because the club does not keep records of the Airstreams that were owned by members.
In any case, enjoy your Tradewind!

Hi lahrfarm,
Last one for tonight. And an easy one. #30035 was first assigned in 1975. From then through 1981, #30035 was assigned to Millard and Ireta Emanuel of Lawton, OK, no caravans. #30035 has been unassigned since then, so we can say with certainty that the Emanuels must have owned your '69 Ambassador. Enjoy!

Hi Baseman,
I am still extremely busy with work, but will try to answer one (yours) tonight.
#25086 was first assigned in 1971 before your '74 Tradewind was built. Interestingly, it was it was unassigned by 1973, and was still unassigned in my 1975 Directory (I have no 1974 Directory, but assume it was also unassigned in that one).
#25086 is assigned to Charles and Edna Fosha of Pensacola, FL, from 1976 through 1990, no caravans. The number has been unassigned since 1991, so I think it is safe to say that the Fosha's owned your Tradewind.
I hope you have many great adventures with it yourself!

Thanks Joe. We purchased our trailer in Portland. It was originally owned by the Mattingly's then sold by their estate in 2009. We purchased it from the following owner. Thanks for your help.

Hi BoCox,
Both numbers were first assigned before your '69 Safari was built, making identification of possible prior owners a challenge:
- 11260 was first assigned in 1964
- 15537 was first assigned in 1966
Here are the assignees for those numbers in the WBCCI directories from 1969 to now:
11260:
- 1969: Unassigned
- 1970-2005: Carl and Genell Land, Dalton, GA, no caravans
- 2006+: Unassigned
15537:
- 1968 or earlier to 1975: Robert and Emma Gibson, Bothell, WA (1969) and Seattle, WA (1975), no caravans.
- 1976: Unassigned
- 1977: Unknown (missing Directory)
- 1978-82: WD Todd, Oak Ridge TN, no caravans
- 1983-84: Unassigned
- 1985-2007: Jack and Polly Sharer, Dallas, TX, (only Jack was listed in 2007), many WBCCI unit, region, and national caravans between 1989 and 2003
- 2008+: Unassigned
I guess we can be pretty certain that the Lands owned you '69 Safari for at least part of the time they were members. I would tend to guess that the Lands bought your Safari new in 1969 and then joined WBCCI immediately. Since the 1969 Diretcory lists membership as of 12/31/1968, it is reasonable they they might not have been listed until the 1970 Directory came out (membership as of 12/31/1969).
Whether Mr. Todd or the Gibsons or Sharers also owned your trailer is more of a guess unless you find paperwork or a dealer sticker linking it to WA, TN, or TX.
That's all I got. Enjoy that Safari!

Thank you!
Well the 15537 makes more sense for the details I know about it. Since I purchased this in KY they told me they were the owners since the early 80's. There is a slight faded sticker that refers to dealer in TN also. The 15537 number was also more clear on the front and back of the AS. The 11260 was definitely the harder to read of the two numbers making me believe that it was not registered right off the bat.
Nevertheless, great info to know Joe! Thanks for all your hard work on sharing the info you have.
With technology the way it is today, why isnt there a website with the information you have? Or is there? Sure would take some work off your plate....
