I wonder how long numbers do need to be on uncoated aluminum to leave a permanent image behind.
That's a pretty cool story! It wouldn't surprise me one bit that there would be some other non-standard item on this trailer. I mean, it already has tandem axles, two doors, a rare floorplan and a supplemental 12 volt electrical system!

Cool! Now that's great to know, and makes total sense since this trailer was built in the Los Angeles and I bought it from someone on the West Coast too. Plus, it has all the signs of a California vehicle; very light weather-related wear for instance. I wonder if they were the original owners. I'll have to see if I can look them up...

Ken,
What does your 1959 directory say for WBCCI numbers 1467 & 1487? Thanks.

Ken,
Thanks. One of those names may turn out to be the original owner of a '56 Overlander I just "found". Like many other WBCCI numbers these two numbers have changed hands a few times over the years.

I haven't yet attempted to contact the owner of the Overlander to see if it might be "for sale", because it will need frame work (probably replacement). See my other post for more questions about that.

I must add, however that I just read your ongoing post on the restoration of your '58 Overlander and I am impressed. It looks great. Now the question for me is am I willing to do the same, but take it to the next level and tackle a project with significant frame issues?

Now I gotta return the favor . . .

I don't beleive WBCCI was up to #25544 in '59 (I think they were only up the the 15000's in 1966 when Lorrie's parents joined), so Ken's directory should be of no help here, but my directories show . . .

1981 - Donovan and Lucille Lanning - Carey, OH
1989 & 1991- Unused
1993, 1994 & 1995- Donovan and Lucille Lanning - Carey, OH
2001, 2004, & 2005 - Unused

Thus as far as my directories can tell, this is a "one owner" number, but I must advise that between the late '60's and 1981, it could have had other owners, . . . or maybe not.

My 59 directory only goes up to 6000.

Joe - you can do it! The only skill required is patience. The only way I've been able to do this (other than patience) is this forum - there isn't anything we can't talk you through.

Having said that, you do need to evaluate the project and decide if it is worth taking on - my frame was in great shape except the po decided to cut the frame to install plumbing (duh - why didn't I think of that ) plus I had a few cross members that were broke - I took the trailer to my friendly welder and he fixed it all - made it nice and easy for me.

Thanks Joe,
The man we bought the AS from had traced it back to the original owner and said her name was lucy. So I guess Donovan and Lucile were the original owners. We are the fourth.

Alright . . . #3945 . . .

1981, 1989, 1991, 1993, 1994 & 1995- James & Marie Cunningham - Ypsilanti, MI
2001 - Unused
2004 & 2005 - Brian & Terri Davern - Vancouver, WA

So "yes" 3945 is currently "in use".

66overlander, Ken J,

Thank you for looking up 3945. Now I need to figure out how to get the numbers off my trailer. Then get my own.

Best way to get them off is with a heat gun - warm them up and they should come off - that is unless they are very very old - then they are very difficult to get off - have to take off a piece at a time....

I would think they have been on the Trailer a long time, of the 4 numbers only one is still red. the other 3 are white.

thanks for the help

Sorry for not getting back to you quickly - I was out of town for the holiday. For WBCCI #4560 I find . . .

1981 - Eugene & Elizabeth Philbrick - Paso Robles, CA
1989 - Robert & Margaret Kennedy - Pittsburg, PA
1991 - Robert & Margaret Kennedy - Penn Wood, Limestone, PA
1993, 1994 & 1995 - Robert & Margaret Kennedy - Tucson, AZ
2001 - Unused
2004 & 2005 - Ric Markle - Moriarty, NM

The number on your trailer appears to have changed owners and locations several times over the last 25 years. Based upon your location in Ohio, I might guess it may have once belonged to the Kennedy's when they were in PA (or perhaps to someone else who had the number before 1981).

Hey Joe, I've got one for you, if you have time. The numbers on my '73 Overlander are missing but there is a faint outline left. It looks like 28281, but could be 28231. I know the trailer was purchased (I believe orginally) from Hawleys in Fayetteville, N.C. and was most recently titled in North Carolina. Any help would be appreciated!

Jim,
Both the numbers 28231 and 28281 are unused in all of my WBCCI directories, so it appears that your number was last used before 1981. It certainly appears that there is more re-use of the 4 digit numbers than the 5-digit numbers in the WBCCI. I am going to guess that whichever number is correct for your trailer, it was probably placed on it in 1973 right after the trailer was purchased new. The original owners must have dropped out of the club by 1981. Sorry, I couldn't be of more help.

Thanks Joe! I appreciate your looking it up. Maybe something will turn up from another source later.
