tank and gas monitor question

We have a new to us 1997 Norman Rockwell.
The tank monitor does not show the levels of the various tanks. When I push the"test" button it does light up. Is that how you find out the tank levels or should it read out all the time.
Thank you for any help you can offer.

Chances are that your propane tanks have been upgraded to satisfy the Overfill Protection Device (OPD) law that came out in 1998. My 1993 34' Excella tanks had the upgrade and we noticed that neither the gauge on the tank nor the monitor gave us reliable indications. One dealer told us that installing the OPD valves negated the tank level indicators as the valves were different. We simply keep an eye on our automatic switch over regulator and when it shows 'red' then we get the empty tank refilled.
