If I had to guess on the cause, I'd say the VHB tape they use to hold the panels in place on the van has failed due to improper application, and then the heat of the sun caused the plastic to expand / contract vs. the underlying metal body panels, which then leads to wavy nonsense. So far, we don't have this on our 2016, though we have failed paint on those plastic panels and we've had to re-attach the "chrome" strips, which were all about fall off the van due to failed VHB tape, which was most likely improperly applied on the line.
If the plastic body panels are attached to the van some other way, then maybe those attachment devices failed, or perhaps they are spaced too far apart.
In any case, if your van is under warranty, I'd get it into the dealer ASAP just so they can take a look and file a claim with Airstream - even though it could take weeks or months to get the requisite parts to fix it. That way, when they get the parts, you can schedule to bring it back in for a relatively quick repair.
