Airstream 19 115VAC question...

Hello community,

I have a question about the generator and what is powered. When the generator is running should I have 115AC at the "GFI" outlets? Or are those only powered by shore power? I looked at the wiring diagram and is seems that they should be as there is a transfer switch.

The inverter plug on the LH side works with the inverter and generator. The microwave works on generator. The 115AC outlet on the RH side (galley near the sliding door) and the external outlet have no power when on the generator (I checked with the AC tester Airstream provides). I have not tried shore power.

I didn't check the circuit breaker panel and there is a high probability that this is an operator error.

Any insight is appreciated.

Assuming you connect your generator and shore power through the same plug then your trailer will not know the difference. If a GFCI outlet does not have power and the breaker is not tripped then try testing and resetting the GFCI for that circuit, note that they may only reset if power is available. If the outlet still does not work then it is time to start checking line side voltage to find the failed component.

Answering my own question...

It was operator error!

I found the GFI breaker "open". It seems that when I used the power line tester that Airstream provides it has a button on it and I pressed it (thinking it turned on the tester). That button actually tests the GFI function of the outlet and causes the GFI breaker to open. Doh!

Another gotcha with a GFI breakers ( in a van or not ....): They often will only reset properly when they are powered up. This becomes an issue if you try to reset them before you have power ( generator or shore power ) supplied.
