Swapping 40# cylinders for 30#

I need to get new propane cylinders as mine can no longer be recertified. I have been thinking of putting in 40# instead of the stock 30#ers. Has anyone do this WITHOUT modification to the original tank cover? It looks like they will fit, but is really, really close. There is a bout a 6 inch difference in height and I have measured it, but not with the cover closed. Thought I would check here before ordering the 40# tanks. Thanks for any thoughts/advice...
