Adding Window to '76 Sovereign

Hey There,

I am 11 days into a complete renovation of a centre bath '76 Sovereign. I have the trailer completely stripped down and am getting ready to restore the chassis and make my new subfloor.

I'm starting to think about what I will need to get the skins back up and am thinking I might like to add a new window on the streetside of the trailer in front of the bedroom.

Has anyone done this before? Is it possible to do without removing the exterior panel? Does anyone have any tips or ideas on how it could be done?

I'm a little nervous to try and pull this off, and the donor window is very expensive so I'm looking for some intel that could help inform my decision here.

I'm planning the exact same thing on my '75. I'm not ready yet, but my plan it to create a cut template, mark, cut, then simply seal and install the new window by riveting it into place with Velkum. I will be marking my template on the inside so I don't hit a "stud" by mistake. I will use a large drill about an inch inside one edge then use my pneumatic cutter to cut a clean opening. I'll likely grind the edge smooth-ish when I'm done. I'll need to make a corresponding hole on the interior skin once I reinstall them, but I figure the old lipstick to mark it trick (used for electrical boxes and drywall in houses) should work.

We had to re-skin a lot of our 55 due to corrosion and damage. Granted, we had templates to go by, but not difficult. Like Dobergirl said. Cut it in between the ribs, install a header and sill out of 1 1/2” 2024, or equivalent, and I connected the horizontals back to the adjacent ribs. Basically how you would frame in a window on a house. After the window is in and sealed/riveted, you can create some perimeter trim pieces. Good luck, Bubba
