Wow, what a cool trailer - there were manufacturers who made look alike Airstreams - that may be one of them - or someone very talanted made a copy. Would love to look at it - could be worth restoring just for its uniqueness.

As of 10/17/04 the bid is $56.77. You would think they could probably get more money for it at the scrap yard. The aluminum alone is worth more than that!

If it is what I think it is, it is a late 40's Curtis Wright. If so, it is in many ways an actual Airstream.
Wally Byram needed a plant to build his Airsteams after WWII, and Curtis had capacity, experience building monocoque aluminum structures, and experience building travel trailers going back to the 20's.
Wally and Curtis fell out fairly quickly, and he went out on his own. But Curtis continued to build from his design under their own name for some time.
Just like the older Airstreams, they were built on a pipe frame, so it is on a flatbed trailer for a reason. They are a bear to rebuild.

The tag mentioned in the above post is not from this trailer. It is in the link provided in the auction, but is from the Curtis Wright this seller has pictures of and not from this trailer.

I looked at the photos again... there's no tag on the side of this one, and it sure doesn't resemble anything built by Curtiss Wright, Silver Streak, or Airstream of the era. And, Ted, I think you're right... it looks like wood stringers rather than aluminum framing inside that ceiling. How interesting! There probably isn't much inside structurally any more.

I am glad to stand corrected. I thought it looked a bit "square shouldered" for Curtis Wright, but then what do I know.
Wood framing. Wow.

I think its a home built from somebody with above average skills. Maybe it was from a very short lived company even but it is not refined very well like a production product usualy is.
Wood framing is nothing new. Many cars where built that way. The MG's are a good example.
That MG has a lot of wood that the sheet metal is attached to to form the main cabin.
That camper having a wood under structure is unique but not an unheard of or unsound building technique. Wood after all is pound for pound stronger then steel. Just a matter of know how to build it. The desgn looks quite sound just very labor intensive compaired to what you can do with extruded aluminum ribs.

Looks like it needs more than TLC. There is a lot of decay in those wooden ribs. And the partitions have a lot of delamination in the plywood. My guess is that it would be an enormous undertaking and that is probably why the bid is currently $71.
However, it has a pleasing shape and would be a great conversation piece. But then again, so is the construction of the Hoover Dam!

Looks like it could have belonged to Jeff Foxworthy's old Publicity manager before he made it big.
