Visit to Hofmann Architecture, Living Vehicle
We are hanging out in Malibu this week and were able to go up to Hofmann Architecture in Santa Barbara on Wednesday to see the Living Vehicle in person. Hofmann Architecture has done many Airstream restorations and have started a new business entity that designed and is producing the Living Vehicle. We spent about and hour and half with Matthew Hofmann, discussing all the thoughts that went into it. He and his crew have addressed a lot of the challenges with full time living, especially with the envelope. Great insulation, no wood in the floor, and double pane windows. There first unit only has a 13.5k AC because of this. They area really designed for off grid living and getting off the beaten path.
A couple of surprises. First, I didn't expect my wife to care for the clean esthetic but she loved it in person (likes the Classics way more then myself). Also, Matthew was telling us that he does not see this competing much with Airstreams. He feels it is a different market and the common factor with their clients so far is they are all full timers. My only disappointment is with all of his work in the past on Airstream redo's and his great design with them, I was really hoping that Airstream would bring Matthew on board in a similar manner as they did with Christopher Deam and come out with some new, very modern designs.
